Is one day sufficient to stay in this town? Traveling there in April. Any info appreciated.

I know many people do it as a day trip from Prague so obviously all the main sights can be seen in one day. However, I think it would make for a preety long day trip - a 3 hr bus ride each way.

I was proposing to spend two nights there on our forthcoming trip and was generally advised that one night is quite sufficient and to use my other night elsewhere.

We've been there 2 times. (in 2004 en 2006)
In 2004 we camped just 10 miles away and visited the town about 3 or 4 times.
Last year we stayed just for 1 night to see the town again.
It's a lovely little town that needs to be discovered at a slow paste.
So i suggest to stay 2 nights so you don't miss a thing.

TIP.
Enjoy a diner at 'U Dwou Marie' (the two Marie's).
It's a very little restaurant along the river (you can easily miss it)
That servers good food (try the Bohemian Feast!!!)

We stayed at the Penison Anna the beginning of the month. It was great, she had a garage that we parked our car in for the night accross the street (for a fee) and we walked to the restaurant Mastal for dinner and then walked the town until late at night. The castle was closed, but the town is beautiful. It was cold, but the locals were out walking and sitting in small park areas and enjoying the evening.

I visited Cesky Krumlov in May of 2005 and had a wonderful time. We actually daytripped there from the Berchtesgaden area of Germany (something I would not do again because it took forever!). We had about 6 hours in Cesky and to be honest I think that was enough. The town itself is fairly small and compact. We visited the castle, ducked into a couple of churches, ate at a small cafe for lunch and then just walked around admiring everything. I think a day would definitely be sufficient.

I did this as daytrip as well and found 6-7 hrs to be quite sufficient to walk all over the town, have lunch, and tour the castle. However, if you can attend a night concert at the castle, staying 1 night is a good idea.

I think one day is sufficient. I also did it as a day trip from Prague, and it wasn't a problem at all. I don't go to bed at 6 pm or anything, so had no problem with leaving Prague around 9 am and returning at 7 pm. If I weren't on that day trip, I would have been doing something else all that time somewhere else, anyway. I enjoyed seeing the countryside for a change. It doesn't take 3 hrs to get there, it's only 190 km away (about 118 miles).

I didn't take a public bus, though, so don't know how long they take to drive that distance. I took a day trip tour through a company, which was very nice.

I think you could kill 2 days there, if you spend a day touring the castle & are lucky enough to get a ticket to the Baroque theater. You could also see a concert and go to the museums. Day two could be shopping & exploring the "other side of town" - away from the castle.You could also try to stop at some other towns between there & Prague.

If you have some extra time you could consider visiting Ceské Budjovice and/or Holasovice.

Ceské Budjovice (in German Budweiser) is the city where they brew the original Budweiser Beer. Try the difference ;)

Holasovice is a very small town with only one square with wonderfull
That part of Czech is wonderfull so have fun.

My friends and I visited Cesky Krumlov last September 2006. We stayed overnight in Hotel Old Inn. Believe an overnight stay is fairly sufficient - we arrived in the afternoon, toured the castle then explored the town, had dinner and even had enough time to shop that evening and the following day before going back to Prague at noon. The amber and garnet jewelry are quite pretty and reasonably-priced in the shops there. Hotel Old Inn was ideally located as it was right in the town square itself but the room we stayed on the 2nd level overlooked a bar so it was pretty noisy till the wee hours of the morning. Overall however we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this quaint and beautiful town.

I second the idea to visit Ceske Budejovice. Take a brewery tour & see how the stuff is made, have a sample, etc.
