Chelsea Flower Show
Watching the TV coverage last night it occurred to me that some of the garden enthusiasts who post here might not actually be at the show and might appreciate:

"It looks mobbed"
SiobhanP: Good news re next year. the attendence has been capped for several years at 187,000 but apparently the average stay is longer now so the site just gets swamped. The RHS has decided to extend the run starting in 2005. They are adding one day but not raising the attendance ceiling so each day should be a less crowded.

Last year a friend and I went and it was pretty amazing but so crowded that viewing was difficult and the wait long for everything. We got our first day tickets for afternoon only and second full day. That gave us a chance to check out everything the first day on the cheap and go back the next day and do the serious viewing. It won't hurt to know that there isn't much else around the area and no close tube spot. There were "volunteers" with rickshaw-like vehicles, leg propelled, who asked for donations. That was fun - but I couldn't find any on the way back. Quite a hike. Food is very expensive at the show - 40 pounds for lunch - four courses with wine and delicious but so dear. There were cheaper options, however. Split of champagne - 20L (can't make the pound sign). Still, everyone should go at least once. And then go to the Physic Garden close by. It's been around a very long time, marvelous, small, interesting and not crowded with a lovely gift shop. It normally isn't open every day but is during the Chelsea Flower Show.

My boyfriend was saying why don't they have it over a week. I was thinking maybe the exhibits will be worn out or wilting by then as many are at their peak over the show days. He will be happy to know its longer. I still can't believe he actually wants to go with me!

I went on Thursday for the first time. It was great, but so crowded. We had tickets for the morning and arrived before 9am. By 11-11:30 it was too crowded for us and we left. For anyone thinking of going next year, try to get tickts for the morning and get there first thing.
Also, there are a lot of vendors surrounding the gardens. Skips those and go right to the gardens and pavillion. The "stores" were never as crowded as the plants.
