Cheese Shops - Neal's Yard Dairy in London

I just saw a show on TV about cheeses in Great Britian. Have you been to Neal's Yard Dairy?

It appeared they had some lovely selections of various cheeses. The inside of their shop was full of people tasting cheese.

We love cheese and thought that, along with some great bread, this would make a wonderful afternoon snack.

Please tell me about Neal's and/or any other cheese shops you know about.

There is a lovely cheese shop in spitslfields market by Liverpool street station http://www.androuet.co.uk/. They also have a great restaurant that serves fondue etc...go on a Sunday when the market is on if you can!

I haven't been but this one looks good too http://www.lafromagerie.co.uk/# or this one by Piccadilly circus http://www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk/index.php/

And most markets will have them as well like borough market http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/

Enjoy!!

Neal's Yard sells a large range of the very best of British cheeses. We have friends in Lincolnshire who have their cheeses shipped up by train for dinner parties. You will find bread and biscuits (what Americans call crackers and what we eat cheese with in England, bread is more French) for sale there too.

Paxton and Whitfield is much older and famous for its Stiltons.

Borough Market, as Michael suggests, would be your best option. It's London's best food market. As well as a large branch of Neil's Yard (not a market stall, rather a shop to the side), there are numerous food stalls offering free samples of great cheeses. Borough Market isn't open every day so check opening times.

I have been and bought in Neal's Yard Dairy. The smell is amazing and a wonderful array of beautiful cheeses. For myself, who doesn't have a sweet tooth , the idea of being locked in overnight would be a dream come true!

The best cheese shop in London is now the John Lewis basement in Oxford Street (though the cheese counter at its Waitrose supermarket in Canary Wharf runs it pretty close): run by professional retailers, it's increasingly making Paxton & Whitfield look like a quaint Olde Englishe relic, kept going to remind us how mediocre English cheese shops used to be and to give tourists a taste of something they think's typically English. In fact, most newer central London branches of Waitrose (such as Edgware Rd) have terrific cheese counters

The two La Fromageries are fine, though I prefer the Highbury branch, which visitors might think's a bit remote from the tourist trail.
