Cheese or Chocolate Factory trip?

Dear Fodorites,
In May, we may not be able to take the official Chocolate train to Grueres.
What are the options if we get some time? Cheese or Chocolate factory near Montreux? Which are the best choice in [any part of]Switzerland for both of these 'Swiss specialties'?

Should one buy these things as a souvenir from these places or standard stores?

Hi kamleshrut,

You can do it all on your own. The Cailler factory is in Broc and has information at You can just take the train and show up at the door.

Same with cheese. Just take the train to Gruyeres (note spelling if you want to do a search) and see the dairy or just buy the cheese.

You can buy Gruyere's "double cream" in a bunch of dairies in the region.

Where else will you be on your tirp? You can visit an alpine dairy and watch cheese being made on the farm at the top of the Allmenalp cable car, from Kandersteg.

Well, yes, and there's also a cheese dairy in Chateau d'Oex. But I thought the op wanted something "near Montreux"?

Yes, I wasn't sure about that. Kamleshrut said both "near Montreux" and "any part of Switzerland." And unfortunately the Allmenalp cable car doesn't begin operation until 26 May.

May is a bit early for the high alpine dairies, so Gruyeres is probably the best choice.

Thanks Enzian and Swandav . As always you have been a great help.
Well then Gruyeres and Broc should be on the list. I have read about beautiful region of Kandersteg. Probably difficult in this trip.
Well. Enzian, my plans have been made.
It is an ambitious one. But we are used to fast pace.
My family of 3 [with wife and daughter 20yr]
will reach Berne on 17th May. Rest. We want to visit Berne [for half day] later.

Any suggestion for Jazz festival?

18th May- move on to Luzerne - Backpacker hostel for 3 days. Visit Q.Rigi,Mt.Titlis and Mt.Pilatus + Luzern walks, museum, evening dinner + cruise.

Is it possible to visit Rhine fall at Schaffhausen? Not to let go any of the 3 top peaks.

21st catch William Tell Express. rest Lugano. Evening stroll/Lake/museum.

Which are the pro and cons between doing the same route on our own and official WT express?

22nd Bernina Express to St. Moritz.

Should I reserve in advance for this scenic train ride?

Want to drop for few hours at Pontresina or come back from St. Moritz for Muottas Muragl.
Next day-23rd Glacier Exp to Zermatt.
24th visit Gornergrat if weather is good. [Can one predict weather for May?]
Evening reach Lauterbrunnen, via Visp, Spiez.[ Any other route?]
Next day visit Jungfrau. [Weather permitting again]
26th visit Schilthorn and Trummelbach falls.
Reach Leysin [RCI affiliated]resort by night.

Then for next 6 days, not finalized.

Suggestions are very much needed.

From Zurich, we will depart on 2nd June.
Thank you all.
