Checking out Manchester for possible move
Hi everyone,
I'm going to Manchester, UK, for a job interview. I have reasonable chances to get the job, but I'd like to get a feeling for how life is in Manchester while i'm there. Never been to the UK before. I'll have 1 day and 1 night free to tour around. Where should I go to see good neighborhoods to live in? Background: I'm in my early thirties, I'd like to live in a safe but lively area (bars, restaurants, etc.). Hope somebody can give me some pointers. thanks! |

A long time since I was in Manchester, so maybe these sites turned up on Google might help:
BBC homepage for Manchester (it has a messageboard where people might be better placed to answer this one): http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester// http://www.liveherenw.co.uk/living/man/ http://www.itchymanchester.co.uk University of Manchester guide for overseas students: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/studyher...osemanchester/ |

See my comments in a previous thread - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34578901. I like Manchester a lot & wouldn't mind living there. It's very friendly !

It's a pretty nice city. It has the highest student popularion is Europe, so if you are young there should be plenty to attract you. There are several theatres and of course it is the home of the Halle Orchestra.
It's quite handy for the Lake District and not all that far from North Wales. If you want to find out about neighbourhoods then this is a very useful site http://www.upmystreet.com/ If you go to the section "my neighbours" it is almost uncannily accurate. |
I'd want to live right in the city centre, maybe in the Village, which is where my husband stayed when he was working there. There are lots of groovy loft style appartments in converted commercial buildings, and I'll bet the rents are cheaper than in 'nice' suburbs like Didsbury. Most of the best pubs, bars & restaurants are in the city centre.
