Checking Baggage via Train Station to Airport
 

We just returned from Switzerland yesterday and never considered checking our baggage through from a train station to the airport but found it to be a wonderful time saver. On our final evening in Luzerne I stopped at the baggage area of the train station to inquire about the lockers as we planned to keep our larger bags overnight there. The helpful attendant inquired why we didn't just check our bags through to the airport. The locker would cost 5 SFR but to check the bags through would be 12 SFR each and we would get our boarding pass immediately and we would not have to stand in line the following day. We could go directly to the boarding gate. It was wonderful, saved us about an hour, and when we arrived at Dulles our bags were there, in a plastic bag, and it was well worth it. We should have done this years ago but just didn't know how convenient it was!

Apart from Paddington-Heathrow Express I would'nt recommend this anywhere else other than Switzerland, as only they seem to be efficient and reliable enough to be sure of getting your bags safely on arrival. You've got to admire their public transport system!

We have frequently checked luggage through from the train station in Switzerland when traveling on Swiss Air. Also the other way around - from US airport to final destination within Switzerland. The bags traveled from Zurich airport to ski resort, and we were able to ride the train with no luggage. Very convenient. Bags generally arrive late evening, and usually, the hotel van will go to collect the bags. <BR>I am not sure if any of the US airlines allow this. I was just on a code-share Delta/Swiss Air, and had been assured by Swiss Air I could do this. Delta (Atlanta departure) did not want to do this, but finally agreed after contacting Swiss Air. Also, you have to get a green customs tag ahead of time to send the luggage via train to final destination. Tags available from Swiss Air.

Can you imagine trying to do this in Italy?!
