Cheapest Way From Munich Airport to Salzburg
My daughter and I are going to Salzburg at Christmas time and are flying into Munich Airport. Two questions. Can you take a train to Salzburg without going into the Munich Bahnhof? Is there a shuttle service of some type that is easier and cheaper? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheapest/Easiest way is to buy a Bayern ticket at the airport - then take the train (S8) into Munich. You don't have to go into the hauptbanhof - you can change trains at the Ostbanhof instead. I like Munich's Hauptbanhof - there are more things to do and see while you are waiting for the hourly train to Salzburg.

Thank you both, that is good information. Do you know how much a round trip to Salzburg is? I have checked the websites and it seems quite expensive for a short trip. Do you know if it is cheaper to buy tickets from the US by Eurail or to just purchase the tickets at the train station? Thanks for the help.
When my husband was alive, we always drove to Salzburg, but with the winter weather, I am fearful of chancing that.

Yes I do, do you? The only good authority for German Rail tickets is the German Rail website's query page, http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. They show the price of a round trip ticket for one by regional rail at €53 person, but as previously pointed out, up to five people can travel on the same trains with a Bayern-Ticket for €27 for all.
Eurail does NOT sell point-point tickets. RailEurope is not a good place to get tickets. Their selection is limited and their prices are too high. Except for promotional ticket which are less online, get your tickets in Germany.
Round trip express tickets cost about €65. There are also one way promotional tickets and round trip Spar Preis tickets available for any train for as low as €29 pP one way if you can commit in advance.

Time between the two cities: about 1 1/2 hrs by express train and 2 hrs by regional train. That's from Munich Hbf to Salzburg Hbf. It you go from the airport it will take longer. If you do go from the airport you are probably best off taking the S-bahn (S-8) to Ostbahnhof and catching the train from there, but it varies; check the schedules at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en.

I would prefer the Schnellbahnnetz map, http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archi...nnetz_2007.pdf, because it shows the tariff boundaries, particularly for Tageskarten. However, the map at http://efa.mvv-muenchen.de/mvv/netzplan_Umgebung.htm is interactive and if you click on a station you will see a map of that station.

I appreciate the info about travel from Munich to Salzburg. We are flying into Munich in June and have a condo in St. Johann im Pongau. We were going to take a train into Salzburg and rent a car there, but is there a train from Munich that goes to St. Johann im Pongau? Stopping along the way is acceptable, because I'm fairly sure there is no express! But is there a train? Thanks in advance.

Since nobody has given the usual answer up to now:
- Try www.bahn.de
- EC/IC train takes at least 2h 32min
- Change in Salzburg

zwho.
logos999 was answering your question by referring to checking the timetables at www.bahn.de. Depending upon the time of day, there are direct trains from Munich to St. Johann im Pongau and there are times that require a change in Salzburg.
