What are the cheapest airports to fly in and out of Europe?

There is no 'cheapest' airport. It more depends on the airline.

However, flying <i>out</i> of the UK can cost more due to higher departure taxes.

Last year I flew into Europe via Malta - cost to fly into Europe was 49 Euro one way.

That makes sense janisj. I've heard that too about UK! J62, that's very cheap. I'm surprised. Thanks Dukey1 for the link. MmePerdu, perhaps it's different in Europe but I've noticed here in the states that some stops are more expensive than others for various reasons. Is that the case with Europe?

I didn't say 'all' about the airline . . . I said it was 'more' re the airline.

And it is true - costs are mostly dependent on the airfare, and taxes/fees are a smaller %.

Janisj, I am really sorry if I misinterpreted anything you said and you have my apology.

BTW, those airfares you mentioned. Do you think they in any way whatsoever reflect the taxes and fees which the airline might just be adding in because of arrival and departure points?

In Europe airfares are quoted inclusive of all fees and taxes. Are they listed exclusive of them in the US? The price of the airport costs is a small part of the total airfare - just look for the cheapest flight to an airport near where you want to visit.
No point in choosing a cheap fare to somewhere at the other end of the continent to where you really want to be - the added costs of getting to where you want to be add up, you pay double taxes after all for taking another flight, and the time taken eats into your vacation time.

US flights are also priced inclusive of all fees.

I agree you don't choose a fligth based on how cheap the airport is as some real cheap airports would have expensive flights just because they were little and out of the way.

Just compare airfares, sheesh.

Stansted and Luton are cheaper to fly into than Heathrow. That's why airlines such as Ryanair use them. Malmo is a cheaper airport than Copenhagen; Skavsta is a cheaper airport than Arlanda (Stockholm) etc. Therefore, the airfares to those airports are cheaper.

Looking for the cheapest airlines into and out of Europe is a misguided way to approach European travel. You have to evaluate ALL the costs of traveling in Europe not just cheap airlines into and out of it. That said. IcelandAir is often a good gateway into and out of Europe. But this is the very least of your planning for costs regarding a trip to Europe.

Convenience is worth a lot. No use buying the cheapest if it means valuable time lost or being worn out when you finally arrive. It's why some buy direct business class flights, even those on modest budgets. Unless you're young and it's all an adventure.

If you are just looking for an inexpensive flight to Europe and are open to different destinations you can use kayak's explore tool to see map & season based airfares. If you know you want to go to Europe sometime in the spring then you can search spring fares to the whole continent from your home airport and it will tell you the lowest fares that exist.

Malta is in Europe.

None of the airports in Paris is "cheap" because we have special taxes to make flights more expensive. One of them is for HIV in developing countries. Most countries have preferred not to have this tax. Only the following countries apply it: France, United Kingdom, Chile, Norway, Brazil, Cameroon, Madagascar, Cameroon, Mauritius, South Korea, Niger.

We still only have half the story so, at this point, useless all around. I'm assuming, until we hear otherwise, the cost from Malta to their ultimate destination was 49€, not from the start of the journey.

The cost into Europe (Malta) was 49 Euros. The flight was from Tunis.

A lot of that depends on where you are flying to and from.

Only you can do the work necessary on the airline web sites to figure this out.
