Anyone know of the cheapest way to get a 1 way ticket to Florence? the cheapest round trip with a 1 yr later return date I could find was 1400 so I'm now looking for 1 way,

I assume you are attempting to use the myriad of discounters and consolidators that hawk their wares on the internet and other places. You know, the bigger ones like Orbitz and Travelocity that seem to be tied in with the airlines in some strange way. But there are also the others such as cheaptickets.com, hotwire.com, and many more. Believe me, if my experience over many years means anything, there is no single "cheapest way" to buy airline tickets.

You didn't say when you have to depart. The cost of the ticket might well be determined by your departure date, especially if it's in the near future.

One alternative is to look for a low cost fare to London, which might be more likely, then take one of the discount airlines (Ryanair for example) to Florence. Good luck.

Try www.cheapseats.com. I found this site in the NY Times and it seems to have pretty good fares for international flights. I would agree that Orbitz also works well. If you have a European credit card, you can try using www.opodo.com, but remember, the prices are in Euros.

If this is realted to some kind of scholastic activities abroad, try www.studentuniverse.com - - they specialize in negotiated rates on longer stays or open returns. But they have time windows too. When is this travel? Our daughter found that they could not help her with September travel, and I think she was looking in late May or early June (last year).

Can't you get a round trip ticket for less than that and just use it one way? I hope that doesn't sound too stupid.

Look at Aer Lingus to Dublin or Shannon from Boston or New York - around $300 one way in August.

From Ireland, look for Aer Lingus or Ryanair or (from the UK) easyJet or other low cost carriers to get to Italy, probably for €40 or less.

Check out www.whichbudget.com for links to low cost carrier (LCC) routes.

Note without a return ticket sometimes immigration people will get suspicious, never mind TSA people in the US.

Thanks for the Aer Lingus tip. the tickets are cheap! however, they won't book for August, only September, the tickets I can get in August are an ok deal for one way but don't save that much in the end considering the hassle of extra stops. I am a student, but am also an EU citizen (dual) so I shouldn't get hassled by immigration for the 1 way ticket, to answer the last post as well. :) thanks for all the info, if anyone else has ideas I'd love to hear them. I checked out the studentuniverse as well but there are no 1 yr return tickets available

Hi winesaaavy7, I had a young family member who went to Italy for something like 9 months last year. I believe after weeks of checking airline prices that her family paid about what you have been quoted.

I am not certain why some folks have decided you might be a student unless it is related to your (to me, anway) somewhat vague reference to a return a year later..but anyway, my advice is to look both at the usual Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, Farechase, type sites (which you may have already)....BUT

also look at aggregator sites such as mobissimo.com, kayak.com, itasoftware.com and consolidator sites such as onetravel.com before giving up.

I find it AMAZING that this post said nothing about where this person is departing from.

Only partially relevant. Doing it with 2 RT tickets would need one from the US to Florence - - and one from Florence to the US, right? And there might be little or no relation between the price of the one and the price of the other, regardless of the time of the year of the travel. Inherently, they will be purchased with differing lead times, with differing world oil market conditions (or "futures"), and differing demands for the seats on the respective flights.

Hop a freighter. They don't charge a premium for one-way trips the way the airlines do.

Freighters cost ca. USD100 per person/day, take 10 days. Cheaper to fly. Been there.

Since you have a year, a few days probably doesn't matter on the departure date. If so, you can check out one of those companies that sells standby basis seats, they are pretty cheap and the one-way thing doesn't matter. www.airtech.com is the main one I know of that I'd suggest. They have a competitor I would not recommend because I think they are unethical... air something.

Thanks for all the tips guys. For the person who asked where I depart from: San Francisco is where I live but to get Aer Lingus deals the closest airport is LA.
With all the good info, I was able to find a cheap ticket for my mom who is leaving in october, which is far enough in the future to get the best deals,
