Flight hub is a good place to check airfares. Also, Airberlin flies German countries throughout europe. I would train between munich and salzburg. It is about an hour and a half train.

Take the direct City Night Line sleeper train Milan Central to Munich from €59 with couchette www.bahn.de/en

Saves a hotel bill too.

Munich-Salburg from €19 www.bahn.de/en

Salburg-Berlin from €39 www.bahn.de/en

when are you going? The cheap discounted tickets can sell out weeks early as they are sold in limited numbers on each train. So if you have time that is the cheapest way to go - but those tickets also have restrictions on changes and refunds so be sure of the specific train you are locking yourself into.

Actually Munich to Salzburg could be done with a Bavarian Lander Ticket which gives unlimited travel on regional trains (not on faster trains) for a whole day, including trams and S-Bahns in Munich to get to the train station - this is good for two or more people - just 27 euros for up to five people, I think, traveling together. Just in case you cannot get the 19 euro fare Man in Seat 61 hypes above.

I would go Milan to Munich on the night train - do Salzburg as a day trip from Munich (using the bargain Bavarian Lander Ticket to go each way for a total of 27 euros!) and then take a day train or overnight train to Berlin.

Then fly back from Berlin to Milan as girlonthego suggests.

Cheapest is not always the best - some folks cannot sleep on overnight trains and if going by rail as Man in Seat 61 suggests you will be spending a collective few days on the train.

I'm all for rail travel, being a rail nut, but in this case it makes more sense to fly - maybe even from Milan to Berlin, then come back thru Munich and Salzburg and by train to Milan.

For lots of great stuff on European trains: www.seat61.com - Man in Seat 61 who posts above his commercial site; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

If you are OK with night trains then that could be the cheapest since you can get deep discounted tickets by booking way in advance and you save on the cost of a night in a hotel and also save daytime travel time by traveling by night.

The Lander Tickets also come in first class for not much more than 2nd class - if say going to Salzburg as a round trip from Munich it would cost about an extra 5 euros p.p. to travel in first-class rather than 2nd, which IME of many regional train rides can always be too crowded - first-class sections however will be sparsely filled even if 2nd class is SRO.
