Try the hotel Nomade. It's in the old part of town, clean, has a rooftop patio, and costs about $40/night. Only hitch is no credit cards accepted. They have a web site, too.

In Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district,we were elated to find the Sari Konak Oteli. It is a delightful, family run establishment with 17 rooms with baths. The atmosphere was wonderful and the rooms were tastefully decorated and extremely clean. The staff went out of their way to be helpful to guests.A wonderful breakfast was served buffet style every morning in their charming garden. The view from the roof is terrific..
Singles were officially priced at $70,but they offer a discount if the payment is in cash.
Try to visit the sites wwww.istanbulhotels.com or www.hotelguide.ch.
I stayed in Hotel Sultan (Gençtürk Caddesi, 29 - fax 0212-513-0305) and payed 25 USD a night. Private bath, color tv, air conditioning, breakfast and dinner included. It's not luxurious, the neighbourhood is not very good, but it's cheap.
