Cheap flights within Spain

Does anyone have any suggestions? We are going from Barcelona to Bilbao. Thanks!

Hi Nancy,

Check www.spanair.com. Spanair usually offers very competitive prices. I just checked a date at random in May and for that route they were offering a flight for 42 euros( one way)

Any route on which Spanair competes with Iberia will usually bring cheaper fares. Unless you can find something listed on www.whichbudget.com I'd go with Spanair unless Iberia flies the route even cheaper.

I flew Iberia from Granada to Barcelona for $35 last year, so try them in addition to Spanair.

Use the www.whichbudget.com site - very useful for this type of flight.

Vueling is a budget airline that serves this route

http://www.vueling.es/

I would check prices there and also on www.mobissimo.com to see if either Spanair or Iberia offer lower prices AND more convenient flight departure times.

We flew from Granada to Barcelona for about $30 last spring on Iberia.

What you have to do is check days on either side of your first choice as well as each hour. The difference between one hour and the next could be 150E per person difference.

good luck.

Hi Nancy,

the cheapest option (depending on when are you flying) is vueling. Intrepid1 gave you the website. Its prices can be as low as 20 Euros (plus taxes). The only low point is that there is only one flight a day, and for this summer it leaves Barcelona at 7:10 am ... You can buy tickets until september.

Spanair used to be a good and cheaper alternative to Iberia, but lately its prices have increased, and it is easier to find surprisingly good fares with Iberia (I managed to snatch a 19 Euro fare last Saturday from Madrid to Bilbao ...).

Also, an american friend of mine had problems last week when trying to buy via web with Spanair. He had found a great rate (only available via Internet and as cyberticket), and when he was asked to enter an ID, he wasnīt allowed to put his passport number. The only ID accepted was the spanish ID number, so he couldnīt get that fare. He couldnīt say that he would pick up the ticket at the airport, because in those very cheap cases you are forced to pick it up one or two days maximum after you bought the ticket. It seems that Spanair uses the spanish ID number as the key to retrieve the ticket, and they havenīt changed the system yet to allow foreign passport numbers.

I did a random check for the 25th of May, and prices were as it follows :
- Iberia, 17 Euros
- Spanair, 19 Euros
- Vueling, 20 Euros

You must add taxes to that. The 41, 42 Euros price mentioned by cruiseluv is more usual, and at the end it usually amounts to something like 50 Euros.

Cova,

Wow! That rate in Iberia was amazingly low! Do they offer these kind of rates last minute? Or can you find them sometimes ahead of time?

cova Mar 25th, 2005 08:36 AM

Hi cruiseluv,

they are easier to find ahead of time. I bought this ticket at the end of february, when I finally knew about the exact dates of my holidays. It helped that I didnīt want to fly on Friday evening :)

Of course, I donīt think they are easy to find on peak days (early morning, late evening flights during the working week), but right now it is easier with the new Iberia website. They show you all the prices for the different flights, and you can select the best one for you.

Thanks Cova,

I'm still waiting to find out what my itinerary in Northern Spain will be this summer, then I'll have some tickets to buy. It'll depend what city my son gets assigned for his language immersion course, La Coruña or Santander. I hope I'll found out soon. Right now Spanair has an introductory rate for their new flights from Madrid to Coruña that's very good.
