Cheap flights/airlines - London to Rome

Does anyone have suggestions for cheap airlines from London (LHR) to Rome (FCO)? We have vouchers that will only get us USA to London - not to our final destination of Rome. On Expedia and Orbitz, British Airways seems the least expensive and most flexible... Does anyone have knowledge of another budget airline or any links for websites for searching for cheap flights?

You can see fares for mainline carriers (can't book, but helpful) at www.itasoftware.com.

Looks like Alitalia is generally cheaper than BA for most dates, but it's date-specific.

No low-cost carrier (LCC) service from LHR to FCO. There are services from Gatwick to Ciampino, but neither is convenient for your itinerary.

Ryan air flights from Rome (Ciampino) to London (Stansed) last year were pretty cheap, about 10 GBP including all taxes. Very inexpensive shuttle from Termini to Ciampino on Eurovision bus service.

We have also considered flights into Frankfurt or Munich, and then a flight or train trip from there. Probably plane, tho. I have not wanted to fly Alitalia with all the talk about strikes, delays, etc.

Would you consider other airports? EasyJet flies LGW-CIA. I realize switching airports is a hassle, and you will have to allow plenty of time and/or have adequate insurance to handle a missed flight. I did both. My insurance required I leave 4 hours between the two unrelated flights, at the same airport.

Try also opodo.co.uk - - use "LON" to check all airports at once.

Best wishes,

If there's more than one person traveling, and depending on how long and how much one is prepared to sacrifice for slow ground connections (eg bus LHR>LGW) and the possibility of a London overnight between flights/airports, then the savings created by going US-LHR//STN-CIA (similar situation with LGW) on a low cost carrier can easily be eaten up in London costs.

Gardyloo - I agree with you on the additional costs. I don't think I'll be able to find a flight that is so much cheaper than a direct LHR-FCO, that it would outweigh the hassle and inconvenience. Even the website for the bus transfers says "Expect and budget for delays." So we are a little nervous to attempt that, although I appreciate the tips! I did visit the ita website and found some flight options. Looks like I've got my help - thanks again to all of you!
