Cheap European Travel
 

Does anyone know where are the cheapest places to travel in Europe with the price of the dollar in mind?

In general, eastern Europe (e.g. Slovoakia, Czech Rep., Poland) is less expensive than western Europe; Scandinavia/Switzerland among others are on the expensive side; and pretty much everywhere, rural areas/small towns are less expensive than big cities.

I agree with Howard, but it does depend on what you are looking for. For the sun, Spain is still a lot cheaper than cenral Europe and Scandinavia. Portugal is also still good value. I must admit that we found it very reasonable in Rhodes.

We found prague to have wonderful inexpensive food but accomodations may cost more unless you really look. There are some Hostels that were in the heart of town. Vienna was higher priced for both lodging and food.

Basically mountain areas of the Alps are expensive, food is higher and so are gondola rides to get up there.

France seems to be more expensive than Italy and Germany. Generally you get breakfast in most Inns and small hotels in Italy and Germany, whereas in France if it is included in the price it is generally minimal (continental).

Walking tours are the best. Rick Steves has great walking tours for most cities which cuts down on cost of sightseeing and also keeps it at your own pace.

Picnics are great and cheaper ways to eat! Be sure to check a bottle opener and plan on picnics. Where they have the big buffet breakfasts you may want to take ziplock bags for extra rolls, etc.

here's the deal - it's cheaper to tour Spain than England, but much cheaper to fly to England than Spain. so the price of your airline ticket should be included in your total budget.

I find Spain and Italy to be very inexpensive. Avoid Switzerland, England, France and all Scandavian countries (for price only - otherwise I'd highly recommend Scandanavia!).
