Cheap(est) skiing in Switzerland

Me and a few friends are studying in Germany. We would like to take a weekend trip to Switzerland to ski, only problem is that we are on a tight budget and only have one chance to go, November 13th and 14th.

Is there a resort that has a hostel near by that would have good snow at this time?

Any advice would be very helpful!!

Hi ab10,

At that time, you are limited to skiing on glaciers. So that means Zermatt or Les Diablerets or Engelberg. Zermatt is never inexpensive, so I would focus on Les Diablerets or Engelberg. Some stuff you can research:

www.titlis.ch
www.engelberg.ch
www.lesdiablerets.ch
www.glacier3000.ch

Good luck!

Swandav: I don't believe Engelberg has glacier skiing anymore.

I've been to Saas Fee many years ago for fall skiing and found it all right. Zermatt is also good but remember it's at a very high altitude.

Glacier skiing is not cheap. We used to go to Soelden, Austria, for glacier skiing but again, glaciers are receding and I would definitely make sure there is suitable glacier skiing before going to the destination.

Hi Swandav, here's a video in English from summer 2009 that reports on Switzerland's summer skiing. They say in the video that only Zermatt and Saas Fee are open.

I was up at Titlis in summer 2007 and no lifts were running then.

So, no more also at Glacier 3000? That's really too bad!

Diavolezza (Engadin) is also open for skiing - since 17th Oct and conditions are quite good. However, I wouldn't make the long trip there from Germany to just ski a bit - not worth it IMO.

Flims/Laax also has fall skiing - since last weekend. Only two lifts are open, of course. But snow conditions are quite good also, 70 cm snow.
