Cheap Eats in Paris/ London
I always see posts on here talking about how great the book "Cheap Eats in Paris/ London" is. While the information about proper etiquette and great restaurants are right on, I just wanted to let anyone who is thinking about using these books know to not trust the maps in these books. The maps are incorrect. When youre in a strange place you usually rely on maps to get you around, but the maps in these books telling you where the restaurants are, are way off the mark more often than on. I'm not talking minor mistakes, I'm talking restaurants being far past streets that the maps show that they are located on the intersection of; on the opposite sides of the road far from the location on the map, and so on. THE ADDRESSES WERE RIGHT, but the maps were wrong. If you're walking to these places at night and following those maps, it can be a little frustrating to say the least.

My Mom and I returned from Paris on Monday. We ate in 6 restaurants from the Cheap Eats in Paris book and didn't have any problems locating them. The maps for these particular restaurants were on the mark. The book does mention the closest metro stop and address. There was one restaurant in the 7th Arr. that is no longer open. Other than that, we didn't have any problems. That's not to say other listed are incorrectly. Maybe I was lucky!

I used Cheap Eats in London and never had problems locating any of the restaurants. However, I never used the maps inside to direct me, but the address and the nearest tube stop listed. For a map, I used my Let's Go Map of London. The main reason I didn't use the maps inside the book, was I didn't really like the look of them, but all the restaurant listings that we visited were great.

The maps for cheap eats in Italy are horrible, hard to follow and often incorrect. I dont know why they do those silly little may drawings but they should have a better illustrator. Have you ever tried to fing one of those little numbers on the map in apoorly lit hotel room or street?? Other than that many of her restaurant recommendations are right -on, but sometime a bit to cutsey. Tell me more about the atmosphere and food. Also many of the menu specifics were no longer available or out of season.

Yes, when I chose my meals, a lot of the menus has changed, but NOT for the worse. Our meals were great! With all our meals, we had an assortment of foods. Each menu offered several choices for each entre, plat, and dessert. After having creme brulee a few times, I would switch to the assorted cheeses for dessert. Boy that was a treat! <BR>
