How cheap? a meal for 10, 15, 20 euros?<BR>What's your limit?

You can always pick up some bread, cheese and wine along the Rue Cler for a cheap picnic.

We like to eat dinner at Brasserie Ecole-Militaire, sort of katty-corner from, well, Ecole-Militaire.<BR>Good food, fairly casual, order what you like. We had mussels, frites, fish, veggie, bottled water, beer for about $40 total. They have good salad plates (salade supreme is good), and great desserts. Service might not be real attentive; I have a feeling they know their regulars and take good care of them. It's friendly enough, and no snubbing, just busy. Can order from a prix-fix menu or the carte.

Rue Cler in the 7th both for sidewalk cafes and places you can get food to take away.

My favorite is Cafe du Marche on rue Cler. Dinner ran around $13 including a bottle of house wine. Since I stayed near there for a month I ate there often and had excellent meals, especially the duck.

bmanley,<BR>Cafe du Marche is an excellent idea-always filled with locals. <BR><BR>More in the 7th:<BR>Also on the rue Cler there's Tarte Julie for nice sweet or savory tartes (their enormous salade Gervises made of duck breast, hazelnut oil and walnuts is delicious-tried it at their branch on rue Vignon in the 8th). <BR> <BR>For that picnic, there's a great selection of cheeses at Marie Cantin on rue Champ de Mars 12, right off the market, and delicious bread at Poujauran on nearby rue Jean Nicot 20. Then pick up some wine at the Nicolas shop on rue St. Dominique, which also has a wine bar for more inexpensive eats. <BR>Speaking of bread, the Cuisine du Bar, next door to Poilane on the rue Cherche-Midi 8 has very reasonable set meals at lunch time in a stylish setting. L'Epi Dupin around the corner on rue Dupin has a 17,5 euro &quot;formule&quot; (a plat &amp; dessert or entr&eacute;e &amp; plat) for lunch, but that requires reservations, fairly far in advance.<BR><BR>Also on rue St. Dominique 103, stop by the wonderful Patisserie Millet at lunch time for an inexpensive plat du jour in the small tea salon. <BR><BR>For dinner in the 6th, there's the casual &quot;Fish La Boissonnerie&quot; on 69 rue de Seine, which has a set menu for 18 euros at dinner (13 at lunch). Or you can also just have a salad or cheese plate at the bar. It's always fun.

I 2nd, 3rd ??? Cafe du Marche on thr rue Cler; great meals, good service and reasonable prices. Their poulet fermier...mmmm. There is also a crepes stand operating a night. Once upon our arrival in Paris as we sat in the restaurant barely able to keep our eyes open the waitress asked the chef to prepare us dinner even though they weren't yet officially serving dinner for another hour.

Thank you the suggestions for cheap eats in the 7th. My family will be renting an apartment on rue Cler in June. I have heard that the Cafe du Marche is closed. Does anyone know if it will be reopening soon?<BR><BR>Any other suggestions for inexpensive, good restaurants would be appreciated. I would like to spend 20E or less each for my family of 4. Laurie,<BR>I walked past the Cafe du March about 10 days ago and it seemed open--there were plenty of people inside sitting at tables (maybe they were just very lazy workmen ;-) ). Wasn't it another restaurant in the area that was closed?<BR>
