Day trip from Split to Hvar - to Stari Grad or Hvar City?

We're considering taking a day trip to Hvar while based in Split. Perhaps will do some bike riding while on the island; want to see the main sights. Would it be better to take the ferry or catamaran to Stari Grad or to Hvar City (or somewhere else)?

Depends on your interests!

Hvar Town is a very upscale place with a harbor close to the sea and some preserved/restored elements of its Renaissance buildings. It also has some medieval streets above the town, and the remnants of an ancient castle high up on the hills behind the city.

Stari Grad has been preserved/restored to its Medieval heritage. It sits at the quiet inland end of a peaceful inlet where people still fish. You'll find bocce courts, not high-end jet-set Martini bars. The only "real" sites are the lovely Trvaldj "castle" and maybe the nearby monastery and a church.

The ferries go to either Hvar Town or a port near (about 3 km from) Stari Grad; as I understand it, there are busses timed to meet arriving (and departing) ferries that you can take from the "Stari Grad" port to either Hvar Town or Stari Grad. Please confirm the options to get from place to place with authoritative sources, noting that I am NOT one!

Hope that helps!
