Cheap & chic Paris hostel
 

Generator Paris opened a new stylish hostel in Paris' 10th last year. This NY Times review makes it sound pretty neat and affordable ($26 for a shared-room bunk bed!). Fashonistas on a shoestring, take note!

That's not too bad for a hostel but I checked rates in the most- bedded room (10 beds) in mid-August, the cheapest period for hotel rates, and it was still 28 euro, not 26. At the end of July, a period when many hotels also discount, it was 32 or more. Paris has relatively high prices for hostels compared to some cities. Surprisingly, it had the same rates at beginning of October, a very popular period as in August.

Otherwise, its rate for a private room are nothing unusual, you can find plenty of budget hotels for that price (over 100 euro, I saw a twin private room with terrace for 160 euro).

But the OP mentioned prices in dollars (I assume American, since the article is in an American newspaper) and the next poster mentioned prices in Euro (probably since Paris uses the Euro). So there should be a difference in quoted prices. But I thought the Euro was worth slightly more than the dollar right now. At least it is when I look at the exchange rates, but I filter both through my own currency (and get a slight headache). So the dollar price should be higher than the Euro price. Or am I so tired my brain has stopped working?

The article says "from 23 euros (about $26) for shared rooms".

I checked a bunch of dates on HostelZ.com to see if it's cheaper in some booking systems but not others. The prices are all over the place. €29 in May (Hostelworld), €43.33 in mid June (Booking.com), €50 for a weekend night in July (Booking.com). HostelZ shows similar prices for each night from most of the booking systems, but some are a little cheaper than others.

My guess is that they're using price-tuning software that automatically sets the price each night based on the current demand.

I'm glad I'm too old for that.

Last I slept in a hostel, I was still reviewing on TA and it was my comment : 'loud, small, expensive - but maybe I'm too old for a hostel...'

As Christina said, if you want to sleep in a private room, the cost is similar to a hotel. And I don't want to sleep with strangers anymore. However I've been in front of the regenetator quite a few times and it looked ok from the outside !

"Cheap" and "chic" do not go together. None of the nice hostels in Paris are among the cheapest, unless you do want to sleep with 9 other people.

In my neighborhood, there is the very popular Yves Robert hostel -- the second newest one in Paris after the Generator -- but the hotels in my area charge the same rate as the hostel -- 25/35 euros for a single. The Yves Robert would almost certainly be cleaner and better kept, though.

It should probably be mentioned that the Yves Robert deserves the name 'generator' more than the other place because it is completely eco-responsible and generates its own electricity with its roof panels -- the largest solar panel generator inside the city.

I slept in a very good 3 stars yesterday for 80 €.
Very good - and well located - just between passages Jouffroy and Verdeau in the 9th.
