Cheap airfares
I keep hearing about airfares being drastically reduced, but when I tried to get a quote for travel to Europe this summer (July 6-Aug 12 or so), the lowest was $1450. We're (two seniors) traveling from Seattle to Croatia--short layover in Amsterdam. Has anyone found any cheaper fares during high season? Websites like FareCompare showed prices upward to $1800 just to get into Amsterdam. Ouch!

Last year the Dutch government imposed a tax on flyers in and out of Amsterdam. So maybe change your route to say UK Germany or France. They do not have this tax.

I have been flying SEA to Croatia every year since 2006. I usually go through Croatia Travel - 1-800-662-7628. Last October I paid $1,258 flying through Amersterdam to Zabreb to Dubrovnik. This year I am flying BA to London ($967.33) and staying a few days with fellow Fodorite Julia_T - wahoo!! and then on Easyjet Gatwick to Dubrovnik rt for $114.00. I am very pleased with these fares.

Would you consider traveling up to Vancouver? We got good fares on a site called CanadianAffair and I believe they ran out of Vancouver as well. We are also going to Croatia but are going to go to fly though the UK - hooking up with cheaper European airlines to get to our destination. We found a daily flight from London to Dubrovnik on British Airways. If we had been more flexible with our dates CanaidanAffair had some great prices. I have flown with them once before and had no problems the flight in that case was with Luftansa. The nice thing is it is a direct flight. This time our flight is with AirTransat - here is to hoping all goes well!
