cheap accomodation in Rome near train station?

Does anyone have suggestions for clean accomodation for 1 or 2 night stay w/in walking distance of Termini Train Station in Rome for my husband and I?
We are hoping to spend less than 100 euros.

thanks

I stayed at Hotel Astoria Garden, if I remember, maybe three blocks east of Termini, toward the Biblioteca Nazionale, on Via Vittorio Bachelet. Clean, but not sure if it meets your price.

Many complain about the neighborhood around the station, but we had no problems.

I would recommend the site www.booking.com, I just found it through Budget Travel Magazine's site and there is a lot of great places there. I would also look at Budget travel magazine's database of hotels, basically it is a list of hotels reviewed in previous articles, along with info on how to book, links to the original article and links to the hotel's website (if applicable). I've found it incredibly useful and have found several Rome hotels in your range.

If possible, don't stay around the Termini - the area is a dump! I stayed coming and going thru Rome and we paid over 100 euros for a room. The first one was the Marco Polo; looks o.k. on the website but a tiny, cramped room and teeny bathroom. Then passed back thru Rome and stayed at a hotel which was maybe a half block out the side door of the Termini. I can't remember the name; the room was o.k. but the area is still a dump!

I would never stay around here again. It's just as easy to taxi to another hotel and taxi back, especially if you might spend 2 nights. What's funny (well, not really so) is we decided to spend a little more for the convenience of being by the Termini - dumb.

It will be tough to find something under 100 euros. My trip was in 2002 so everything will be more expensive.

Last week I spent three nights in B&B San Michele, very close to Porta Pia that means close enough to Roma Termini but no so very close to feel youselves in a dangerous and disgusting environment especially in the late hours of the evening.
Website is www.bbsanmichele.com .
You can pay 80 euro, more or less, but do not forget to ask for room with private bathroom.

Ciao.

Why do you want to stay near the train station? There are many other neighborhoods most people on this forum prefer. For your sightseeing in Rome you will find other parts of the city more convenient for walking

I've stayed in moderate hotels near Termini twice - admittedly not my choice (rugby trips) but they were fine. I don't find the area grotty or threatening, except that I probably wouldn't fancy going on to the actual station concourse after dark on my own. It's quite a convenient area for walking to most of the main sights except the Vatican (which is too far to walk from most areas, at least if you want to conserve your energy for the rest of the day). Yes, I prefer to stay in the centro storico, but the Termini area is fine. As with most such areas, some hotels are better than others. Unfortunately I never kept a note of the ones I stayed at so can't tell you their names. Another website you could try is www.venere.com which I've used several times either to book or just to research. You can narrow down your search by area and/or price, sort by popularity & so on - and it has reviews. Then cross-check with the reviews on Tripadvisor. With Venere you can book most of their listed hotels and get instant confirmation without paying upfront.

Though I was not thrilled about Hotel Brasile, it meets your need to be within walking distance of the Termini and you may get it for under 100 euros, depending on what time of year you're traveling. hotelbrasile.com. There's a great map on their site that shows you the proximity to the train station.
Hope that helps.

Hi

My wife and I stayed at Bettoja Hotel Nord Nuova and you can read my review of the hotel and see pictures on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy.htm . I have also made a Google map of Rome http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy_map.htm and the hotel is marked with a yellow picn. Click on the various markers for more information :d

I would disagree that the area around the Termini is a dump.Yes there are better and more convenient areas but if being close to the train station is important, it is fine. And is walking distance from most of the sites as well.

We stayed at the Hotel Kennedy several years ago which is an easy 5 min walk and a nice and reasonably priced hotel.

I believe the Termini area has undergone some cleanup since 2002.

Oh . . . and another good resource for identifying places to stay is 'Venere' website - http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/
