Cheap accommodation in Venice August 2006
 

I have spent a lot of time looking through the forums for cheap accommodation in Venice. However, although a number of people recommended nice small hotels, many of the posts were a few years old.

The more current posts seem to be about much more expensive hotels. Or is this just an indication of how prices have risen?

Does anyone know of a nice, reasonably-priced (around 90 to 100 euros - or less if possible!) hotel that they would reccommend for a 3-night stay in August 2006? And it is worthwhile to pay more for airconditioning in August?

Have you thought of a B&B? We are staying at the one listed below for four nights at the beginning part of August for 85 Euros a night. It has good reviews on Trip Advisor, and the location is excellent.

Is this for one person or two ?

An optionn is staying our of Venice but very near and good public transortation like Maestre.
There are other options . This way you can park for free if you have a car, sleep for much less, and everyday take a bus for a ten or fifteen minutes ride into Venice.

Other options: Hotel Villa Dori, 3 stars, located in a nearby
peaceful residential area.

P.S. Just noticed your question about aircon - yes, you definitely need it in August.

First, I do not suggest you stay outside of Venice. Even though train transportation in from Mestre is easy and cheap, Venice is one place where I would pay extra to be in the center of things. My first time there I considered this and was talked out of it and was very glad. Second, in August I would definitly suggest you get AC. Venice can be incredibly humid and having a cool place to go for a break is important.

When I was there in July a couple of years ago I found a room for 60€ that normally goes for 200€. When I asked why they said that July and August is actually "low" season for Venice, their "high" season is spring and fall. So there are deals. I stayed at the Hotel Violino d'Oro which has a website, but the price I got was from one of the booking sites. There are quite a few and it is definitly worth it to shop around. One technique is to google the name of a hotel (like the Violino d'Oro) and it will bring up a number of sites. Try them, and also look at other hotels on those sites, then google the name of those hotels, etc. Takes time but there are definitly some nice hotels to be had for relatively little money. We stayed at the Hotel Bernardi which is close to the Ca d'Ora vaporetti stop. Paid 80 euro for a double with ensuite bath. Basic but clean and convenient.

85 Euros per night cash, double (per couple). When we reserved, they sent us details on how to arrive from the airport. Like mentioned above, this is a low season for Venice. Good luck.

Unlike Isabel, we stayed at the Hotel Bologna (Best Western) in Mestre, just across from the train station and bus stop, and neer regretted it for a minute. Look for their internet specials. The rooms are spacious and modern, the restaurant is superb and we could stay twice as long in Venice with the low rate we got.

I also suggest you stay right in Venice itself. There's no other city like it, and so nice to be there 24/7. A/C is probably a good idea for August. Our room at the Hotel Riva was fine, and inexpensive (130EUR for a double with view), but only a few rooms there have A/C, and ours didn't. Although we had a very nice cross-breeze from the corner windows. Plus we had views of two canals that couldn't be beat. Also the Casa Rezonnico is a nice budget hotel. Don't know if they have A/C.

Try the Hotel Galleria, it's a little above your price (105-110 Euro without bath). I stayed there a few years ago, but my sister and her family just stayed there a few weeks ago.

I have spent hours and hours looking for cheap accomodation for our overnight trip to Venice. I too was looking for something around 90-100 a night, but decided that the hotel looked too beautiful to pass up..and hey...it's only for one night...and it's Venice!!!

Don't forget. It would be a great relief to have air-conditioning in mid summer in Venice. Some hotels mentioned above may do or may not.

Fortunatrely Jul/AUG is a shoulder season so you don't pay the lowest but not the highest either.

I was looking for hotels for me and my friends for a stay within 2 weeks and tried 3 hotels I have already stayed in the past. La Calcina, Pensione Accademia and Mercurio all has air-con. I was concerned because it was such a short notice (esp.La Calcina and P.A. is so popular but suprisingly all 3 replied with availability. I took 2 doubles at La Calcina for €119 (mid-season rate - no Canal view) but Mercurio offered a double for €100 (€90 if paid in cash). So worth a try for you for August, I guess.

If I did not choose Mercurio that's because LA Calcina, the hotel itself is great and also I love its location on Giudecca Canal. Also Mercurio's breakfast was less in quantity and quality than La Calcina. Otherwise, Mercurio is perfectly fine considering the price. It's near Teatro La Fenice.

We just returned from Venice and enjoyed our stay in the small B&B Zaguri.

Our room was a quad (160 Euros/night) and the window looked into an interior courtyard, but we could hear the bells ringing with the windows open in the morning, and the air conditioning (very important even in June) worked well. It was very clean and the staff was great. The entry is very well hidden and it's very quiet, but close to everything.

Two years ago, we stayed at the one star albergo, Hotel dalla Mora. They have their own website. While we were in the annex with a shared bath, we had our own shower and sink; only the toilet was shared. It was right outside the room and only shared with one other room. While I normally don't like shared baths, the corner room with windows on 2 sides overlooking a lovely canal with a turn in it more than made up for it. Today's rates are 75 euro per room. The breakfast was hearty. After walking all day, my husband and I took a bottle of wine up to the terrace and played cards for a rest. The hotel provided wine glasses. Gondolas went by very frequently, often with a wedding party. You can't beat this place for the price!!!
