chateau de Gilly
has anyone stayed at the chateau de Gilly, is it nice? good restraunt? near nice vineyards? ...

We stayed at Chateau Gilly in Vougeot a year or so ago. It's about 20mins drive out of Dijon and has beautifully manicured French-style gardens. The 'room' we had was a duplex unit which is separate from the main chateau, very private and well-equipped.

In the evenings, we left the windows ajar, sat back with a glass of wine and enjoyed sounds from the babbling brook and the duckkies. The restaurant served excellent food and the sommelier was most helpful.

It's pretty isolated, not like you can walk 10mins and you'll be in town, neverthe less, nice to stroll around the gardens and village. The hotel helped us book a tour of the vineyards with one of the local companies & the chap who brought us around knew his stuff plus he grew up there, so he threw in lots of insight info of the area - cote de nuits, cote de beaune etc...

I highly recommend the chateau if you need a quiet getaway. Service was thoughtful and the place seemed well-managed. I'm still thinking about the yummy casis sweets they place in the room every evening. We bought loads & took them home.

I hope we're talking about the same chateau but here's the website just to be sure -
www.chateau-gilly.com
I notice they are closed in almost the whole of Feb 2003, so do take note. If you have more questions, please post it here & I'll be happy to offer whatever info I know.
Hi

Glad to be able to offer you some info about Chateau Gilly. I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip. We will be leaving next Thurs for London, Paris & Stockholm and hoping for better weather in London as it's been raining, according to friends. Enjoy !

I notice that the Gilly is no longer affiliated w/ Relais & Chateau. Does anyone know why? Is this a bad sign?

Any more current info on Chateau de Gilly is appreciated.

Hard to say why a property drops out of the Relais and Chateau association. Could be they didn't get the boost in business they expected from their affiliation or that the association felt they didn't live up to standards--or lots of other things. I do know that we've stayed in lots of places that have been in and then out of R&C and often you get better prices for a still lovely property that's "out." For that reason I hang onto all my old R&C guides and consult not only the current ones but also the old ones when looking for places to stay in areas I've not stayed before. Works for me.

It usually means that the Chateau is not up to R. and C. standards anymore. If you had a good time, maybe you are lucky or blessed or that the Chateau has had a '"wake up" call.
