Chasing the Northern Lights

Hi

My friends and I are planning our trip to Iceland in December. We have 7 full days and would welcome any suggestions on must-sees, local hangout spots, spots for the northern lights, budget hotels/apartments etc. Appreciate it much!

It is difficult to recommend something without knowing your interests and if you have already booked your accommodation, where you will be staying and so on.

You can check out this website: https://tripcreator.com/
They have the largest selection of travel possibilities in Iceland so you are bound to find some amazing suggestions for interesting things to see and do on your trip.

Hi

We have finally finalized our itinerary.

Day 1: From airport, drive to Seljalandfoss, Skogafoss and Dhrholaey (if time permits), overnight in Gerdi

Day 2: Ice Cave Tour, Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon. Overnight in Gerdi

Day 3: Drive to Landmannalaugar, Haifoss, Gullfoss. Overnight

Day 4: Geysir, Vatnsleysufoss, Kerid Crater Lake, Reykjavik

Day 5: Reykjavik

Day 6: Glymur

Day 7: Blue Lagoon

Day 8: Fly home.

Would appreciate if someone could advise whether we are too ambitious for the first day etc.

Thank you.

Regards.

How early is your flight home on day 8?
Blue lagoon is just a 1-3 hour thing so it will not take up your whole day. Many decide to visit the lagoon on their way to the airport. Would that be a possibility for you?

Also... day 1 seems a little too packed for my liking. We have a very limited amount of daylight these days, heavy snow and regular storms so driving can be quite challenging, especially after a long flight. When you say Gerði... is that guesthouse Gerði in Höfn? If so, then that is a 450 km drive (5.5 hours in good weather and you want to stop for attractions...

The Blue Lagoon is a vastly overpriced tourist attraction. Iceland has dozens and dozens of fabulous natural lagoons and spas and hot springs that cost nothing or a very small fraction of what you pay to say you've been the to Disney waterland of Iceland. Go look at the official website for Iceland and go somewhere that's actually natural and costs about 5 euros instead of 30, before towels and all the other frills.

Hi,

You can have a look of this article about Northern Lights
http://www.iceland24blog.com/2014/03...n-iceland.html

Take into account that nights are longer in the north and in the Westfjords, so it increases the chances you have to enjoy the show :)

There are some other cool places to chase the lights: the Highlands (where you can go also to hike or camp), the geotermal area of Landmannalaugar (you need a 4x4 vehicle to access in winter), or the Jokulsárlón glacier Lagoon, already mentioned :)
