Chartres - Malcolm Miller tours
Does anyone know if it's possible to make a reservation for the tours of Chartes Cathedral with Malcolm Miller, or does one just show up? (I know the times are noon & 2:45) Is there a limit on the number for any given tour? I've e-mailed Chartes tourism office and Francetourism, but haven't received a response and can't find a phone, fax or e-mail for the Cathedral. Thanks.

Great question Lynne.I would like to know the answer to this one also.Chartes sounds so popular it seems that one would have to book.I would like to know wether or not Mr Miller expects a tip at the end of the tour.He sounds quite learned and I wouldn't want to insult him by trying to tip if he doesn't expect it.

As I recall you just show-up.
As for a tip, Mr. Miller is a scholar, BUT he is also an astute businessman and I doubt he would say no to a tip.

He is absolutely terrific. Chartres was the highlight of our trip two years ago because of him.

If you have a chance to take a tour with Malcolm Miller, do it. I travelled to France when I was 18 with a group of students, and it was arranged that we would have a tour with him. At the end, he showed us how a gothic cathedral is constructed by having us use our bodies (I know, an odd image) to form one. It was absolutely fascinating.

Lynne, you might try 011-33-2-37 21 56 33 from the States. If you call from France, use 02 37 21 56. I don't think he lectures in the winter, and you don't have to reserve, but it would be a good idea to call first to make certain he is there when you plan to go. When I was last there, he gave one lecture at noon and a different one in the afternoon, so several of my clients stayed for the second one. He collects before he starts because, he says, people used to disappear at the end when he collected at that time. I don't think a tip was expected.
