Is there anything more of interest than the famous church at Chartres? I'm wondering if it's worth a trip for a first time visitor to Paris.

I would say that the primary reason for going to Chartres is the Cathedral. The town is quite charming, but the Cathedral is one of the world's treasures. If you have any interest in architecture, stained glass, etc, it's a must see.
If Malcolm Miller is doing his twice-daily tours, try and join one--he makes the place come alive. Email : [email protected] If he's not going to be there, there are other guides available Service Accueil-Visites de la Cathédrale Email : [email protected] A pair of binoculars is very useful for seeing the detail in the windows.. Maybe this other info will help you decide information on Chartres, including hotels and restaurants: www.1heart.com/chartresadvice also, www.ville-chartres.fr/ not such a good website except that you can see a map of the town: www.chartres.com/va/bienvenu.htm info on the labyrinth that is set into the floor of the cathedral: www.lessons4living.com/chartres_labyrinth.htm basic info, with links: http://www.gofrance.about.com/travel.../blchartre.htm |
We just returned from Paris and a day trip to Chartres. I would not recommend this site until you've seen so many others in Paris: Lourve, Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, etc.
It is a charming town and we enjoyed the day. It took about an hour on the train. |
