CHARMING HOTEL IN VALENCIA

Hello All! Will be spending 4 nights in Valencia in April; looking for a charming hotel, downtown, in the 100e @ night price range. Clean, confortable, attractive, NOT a modern highrise..... Any suggestions???

Have you taken a look at inns of Spain, or Secret Places? Both deal with charming hotels.

Loved Hotel Londres. It is in the best possible location--the view from our balcony was literally the view in the post cards. The rooms were clean, nicely furnished, large bathroom, and it only cost 60 euros/night for a double room. Of course this was a few years ago, so I don't know if that's still the case.

On the downside, I don't think it has a website or any place to reserve it online. At the time I stayed there, I was living in Spain, so we just called to book.

you wouldn´t happen to be coming during the regattas? check out www.gtahotels.com for all inclusive rates.

hotel londres is more of a "good for value" "better than budget" hotel. excellent location, but certainly will never make it to the "special inns of spain" book.

hotel astoria, up the street, will probably be out of your price range if it is during the cup. otherwise you might get deal on www.talonotel.com, or www.gtahotels.com

it is one of the icons of the city as it has been here forever, and they have upgraded the rooms. a true 4 star. great lounge with huge old sofas on main floor.
out the door to downtown valencia.
old section 2 min. walk. (same as londres).

i would have difficulty calling any of the valencia hotels i can think of right now "charming".

The Hotel Ad Hoc does have some charm, which is listed on Inns of Spain (http://www.innsofspain.com/hotelview.aspx?h=1353). Its about 100€/night during low season.

The Hospes Palau de la Mar is also charming and comfortable, but slightly out of your price range.

the melia ingles is an historic building but the rooms are not very big.

the nicest thing about it is that it faces the beautiful facade of the impressive ceramic museum. also very well-located, one block from the other two.

I travel about once a month to Valencia and my latest finding in Charming hotels is Hotel Ad Hoc
It is well located, in the old center but not in the noisy part. So the 5 -10 minutes walk from the Melia ingles or Hotel Londres area are very well compenaste by the silence at night.
You can check it in http://www.secretplaces.com/sp/1/hotels/Ad_Hoc.asp

if you are coming by car, the nearest carpark for this hotel is a bit of a walk.

the restaurant on site, if still run by chus godoy, is very good.

i imagine the rooms here are also small.

for larger rooms, try the hotel astoria. ( 5 stories?.)car park next door.

I can't quite believe I'm saying this - but, yes, I have stayed at the Melia Ingles.

I arrived in Valencia without a reservation late August 2005. It was Tomatina day and so I tramped the streets looking for somewhere "reasonable" to stay.

No joy, so eventually I returned to the cheapest place with availabilty, the Melia Ingles.

I wouldn't call it charming - it's part of a chain - but I can't fault the reception staff; the brekkie was great; the room was big and the bathroom was very nice.

Thing is - I don't usually stay in such places so it seemed very swish to me. And it was in a great location. Take a good look at the facade of the building opposite - and visit the ceramic museum housed there if you have time.

But, when push comes to shove - the room I had (100 euros) had s window overlooking an alley. Next day I went looking again. All the Tomatina folk had left and I foumd what I WOULD call a charming place a few blocks away. Cost 19 euros, and had a balcony. Great for people watching. But no TV or complimentary shampoo, or any of that kind of stuff. No reception desk; shared facilities.

Infinitely preferable.

good to hear there are some larger rooms there.

i attended an art gallery session they had put up in a number of rooms on a floor, and we all commented on how it was not good publicity for selling the hotel, as the rooms they had chosen were far from roomy.

it IS a lovely location, as are all the ones mentioned so far.

Well, after much thought, I decided to book at the Melia Ingles.. mainly because of its location and the fact that it's a smallish hotel. I was also considering the AdHoc, but it's my understanding that it's a bit further away from the sights and the shopping, am I right? Probably quieter though... ah, decisions, decisions......

Another vote for Hotel Ad Hoc, great restaurant, try to get a room on the top floor. Nothing is too far in Valencia!

Thanks Owlwoman! Besides the restaurant, what is better at the AdHoc?

the ad hoc is maybe three blocks further from a big store, but closer to the cathedral, antique shops, etc. no distance to make any difference.

i like "seu Xerea" on conde almodovar in the old town.fixed menu for lunch m-fri. Tasting menu evenings, and a la carte.

Steve, the owner, is british/japanese and does a great job with interesting cuisine.

"100 Montaditos" and "sagardi" are two chains that have tasty/inexpensive hunger quenching sandwiches or little breads with something on top. good to kill hunger pains. not a sit down meal, though, unless you pass into the restaurant at sagardi to have a steak and unlimited authentic cider.

in plaza de la reina, and on san vicente.

in the barrio del carmen, you will find a favorite longtime hangout called "Bar el Pilar". Mussels are a specialty here, but patatas bravas, and dozens more tapas and plates of yummy treats will be brought to you quickly if you are lucky to secure some space at one of the teeny tables or at the long bar.

this is a "throw the papers on the floor" place. do not be put off by that. (they sweep every few hours.)

this is an icon in the city.

the french institute is across the street. during the week they have a nice cafe that serves breakfast and lunch and afternon coffee. sometimes free movies and other activities go on there. worth a stop if nearby.

Don´t miss the oldest farmacia in the city.. "san Jaume" now converted to a cafe bar.

enjoy the Lonja lit up at night. a prized world heritage building we are proud of.

enjoy your trip. depending on your dates i believe there may be regattas at the america´s cup bases.
www.americascup.com

if you go down there.. treat yourself to a drink or coffee on the terrace of the 5 star Las Arenas hotel.

Another treat is the piano bar at the Westin, near the riverbed opposite downtown. enjoy your stay.

i wouldn´t change your reservation.
the ad hoc street is pretty tiny and a little dark.. i like the area around the melia inglés better, myself, but neither of them are far from the sights or shopping, and both are going to be nice.. so.. whatever. i wouldn´t pay MORE for either of them, if that helps.

go with your booking and start concentrating on something else.

yes, i live here.. and am so glad to see all the activity for the cup. surprised you got a room at the melia for that price during the cup. not bad.

hope the weather is good then. it has been a weird winter. really windy right now, and cold although this afternoon it seemed to be around 65 degrees!

p.s. the ceramic museum in front of the inlgés hotel is free on sundays.

Hi lincasanova .... again thanks for the info. That's what I like about sites like this one: you can get personal real time information from people IN THE KNOW. I'm going to spend more time answering posts on the Canada boards. The info about the ADHoc street being small & dark is important to me given that I will be traveling alone. So I'm now staying at the Melies again.
Ever been to Canada?
