Charcuterie/Fromage Platters. Anyone know of Paris bistros that specialize?

We will be in Paris for ten days, starting next week, and I'm looking for your experience with restaurants/brasseries/bistros that have awesome selections of charcuterie and/or cheese platters. We usually eat our big meal at mid day, and love going out in the evening to sit with good wine, conversation, and nibbles. None of our party is much into sweets, and heaven to us is a combinations of hearty wine, crusty breads, fromage, terrine, sausage, pate ---- well, you get the idea.

Does anyone have suggestions for places that do that sort of thing particularly well, so we can clog our carnivorous arteries in alcoholic gluttony? Of course, we can load up with armfuls of of baguettes, and stuff from the local cholesterol supplier and do that sort of thing back at the apartment, but it would be nicer, I think, to have my heart attack in the midsts of a lively Parisian crowd.

Any suggestions that don't recommend moderation?

Those all look wonderful. Thank you very much. I can feel my arteries closing just reading the cartes.

Low fat diet only when we get back.

Hey nuke,

A word of caution.

If you try to make up for a lifetime of deprivation in one week - you will get very sick.

((I))
At least I did. :)

Enjoy your visit.

I can highly recommend Le Comptoir at Relais St Germain.

We fell in love with their saucisson! The Iberico ham was also great. We also had a lovely cheese board there. We loved the food there.

If you want to go more high dollar, L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon has wonderful cheese selections and we had that with an Iberico ham and bruschetta appetizer.

I think the link for the pictures from Le Comptoir are on my T/R Christmas in Paris was fantastic (part two).

Wine bars will usually have great cheese and charcuterie. The is a wonderful one on rue de Seine between Rue de Buci and Blvd St Germain. There is a big ham in the window. I especially like Au Sauvignon in the 7th and O Chateau in the 6th

My mouth is watering! Such an abundance of decadence will have us all in a dither about where we spend our limited supply of time and Euros.

And, Ira, thanks for the words of wisdom, but I'm joking more than a little in this post. I have been on a diet for awhile in anticipation of this trip, and my weight at the moment is the lowest it has been since I can remember, so I have no intention of shorting myself in the culinary department in Paris.

The reality is, of course, that my body of eighty summers would surely rebel if I abused it too much, too quickly. But since I must also face the reality that this might be the last trip to Paris in which I can even attempt such gluttony, I am making my best plans to at least give it my best shot.

Thanks for your help.

Bon Appitit!

For a totally different meal experience in Paris, try Le Plomb du Cantal - It's our favorite. They specialize in roasted and grilled meats - and I mean the best steak you've ever had - as well as charcuterie. I've posted on here before about it with a few hints to get in the door if you do some searching.

Don't be shy to share here - our server suggested sharing the steak platter and the salad platter. The salad platter(s) featured all those meats and cheeses you're looking for!

It's in the 14th: 3 rue de la Gaite, 75014 Paris, France

I hope you are not hoping for my recommendations, nukesafe. As a Parisian, I would never go out for such items. But if I did, the location and atmosphere would absolutely count more than the plate in front of me. If you find the perfect place, the cheese and charcuterie will taste just fine with the wine.

I think you would have a lovely time at places like Place Gambetta, Belleville, Oberkampf, Gobelins or Alésia -- totally ordinary neighborhoods with fantastic local charm.

Astier offers a nice cheese plate. The restaurant has a fun atmosphere and cute decor-small place. I think it is on (or near) Rue Turbigo.

Appreciate what you are saying, Kerouac. As as matter of fact the ambiance means more to us, as well. We know we can enjoy gluttony in the apartment for a fraction of the price, but some of these suggestions sound just wonderful for combining overindulgence with good company.

Along the lines of your other suggestions for pubbing in the outer arrondissements, the Paris Greeter with whom we are going to take a stroll will meet us at Gambetta, and take us on a guided tour of the Ménilmontant/Belleville area. We are really looking forward to getting off the beaten track with her. Perhaps she will offer further local suggestions, particularly since we would like to offer her a meal.
