Chantilly day trip

While staying in Paris next May, looking into visiting Chantilly vs seeing Versailles
for a day trip. DH is a horseman.

Has anyone been to Chantilly before? Any memorable recollections to share? What are the places like to eat there?

A few years ago took the train (about 9:00am) from Paris to Chantilly (think it was about a 45 minute trip, maybe 30 min). We walked from the train station past the race track and into the horse stables. It's basically a museum but I recall there was a little horse show going on.

We then walked up to the palace and enjoyed it very much. Lots of artwork and furnishings and you can wander around the lake.

We walked back thru the main street of town and nothing was open. Consequently, we didn't have a meal. In fact, only the stables and palace were interesting.

I do have to say that Chantilly was not the most interesting place I've been to. Your husband may enjoy the stables but it wouldn't be my idea of a "horseman" visit.

A full day in Versailles, taking a complete tour of the palace (I would just get the head phones), walking the length of the waterway, and all the other stops is much more interesting. You can tour much of the Versailles on little tour buses. Definitely get there before they open.

There are little cafes - not great food but keeps you going.

I forgot to say that a few years before I had visited Versailles on a 1/2 day trip and was completely unimpressed; not nearly enough time to appreciate it. If you decide on Versailles, please spend the whole day.

There are equestrian stables and occasional shows at Chateau de Versailles, as well; it seems to be run as a separate entity (not included w/chateau/grounds tickets).
