Chania Flea Market
I heard that there is a flea market or "laiki" in Chania every Saturday (save Greek holidays) that runs from 7:30am to 2pm.
Does this market exist or is there a misunderstanding? If anyone can speak to it firsthand, I would be most appreciative. Particularly interested in its location.

That is an excellent question bdj
These markets are taking place in all Greek cities and of course also in Athens....
It is not a flea market, but rather a green market, where producers are selling their fresh vegetables, eggs, and there are also some very few stands with fish..
In the last years many foreigners were attracted to these markets as a way to make some ( illegal profit) , so they started selling various cheap things.
Laiki in Greek means popular, laos means people, because these markets were invented to supply the working class with low price but good quality vegetables, when there were no super markets....
Laiki takes place every day in a different neighbourhood of a city, here are the names of Streets in Chania, and the days during which you can visit Laiki :
Monday : Sfakianaki Street
Wednesday : Manousogiannakidon Street
Thursday : Akti Kanari
Saturday : Minoos Street ( near Sabbionara Gate)
Here is a useful link to the Municipality of Chania :

Going to Laiki is better in the early morning, when there are plenty of goods... Later in the day prices start to drop, since the producers want to sell everything before they head back home.
Crete is the garden of Greece, it is a main supplier of fruits and vegetables of Athens. Greeks have one of the highest consumptions of vegetables in the world

There is no laiki in Santorini....
On the contrary, as they have to import almost everything prices are much higher compared to other parts of Greece....
Monastiraki is a Flea Market, and especially on Sundays very popular.
There are many laiki markets everywhere in Athens, though i am not sure there is one in Monastiraki, Plaka and Syntagma area as this whole area doesn't have many permanent residents but is more of a business area.
A very interesting laiki takes place in Kallidromiou Street in Exarchia district, which is in walking distance from Syntagma ( 15 min). It is a laiki with many bio products !
Other districts where i am sure there is a laiki are Koukaki, near to the Acropolis and Thission.
