Changing Trains?
I'm going to be going from Orvieto to Assisi by train and was wondering if anyone has done this in the past? I'm not sure which train to book...they all require a change of trains in Terontola/Cortona...my questions is: how long should I allow for going from one train to the other? Is that a large train station? One train change only has about 10 minutes to switch...another has over one hour between trains...one seems very short and one a very long wait. Can we change in just 10 minutes? Thanks for any insights...

Sorry I have not been there, but 10 minutes may work if the trains are on time. I would take the one with an hour.

Cortona is not a small station. Changing trains in general in Italy is a piece of cake. BUT that depends upon whether or not you have luggage with you AND how much luggage you have, how heavy it is. If you're really concerned, do the 1-hr.-bt-trains itinerary. Or better yet, don't decide until you get there and have had some experience using the trains, at which point you'll have more confidence!
Orvieto is so beautiful -- enjoy! |
The Cortona station (it's actually Camucia/Cortona) is about as small as they get. 2, or 4 tracks at most. Not exactly Grand Central. 10 minutes is plenty of time to change trains IF the trains are on time to begin with. I'd go for whichever one is more convenient, but perhaps make a note of what time the next train comes by in case you miss the connection.

Hmmmm...I consider 2 - 4 tracks a decent-size station in Italy, holly, no?! It's not like one of those stations where the trains only stop once a day!

Once or twice an hour, perhaps. On a busy day.

Please notice that Terontola/Cortona is a different station from Camucia/Cortona.
The first one is at the intersection with the rail line to Perugia/Assisi. The second one is the "central" station for Cortona town, and is some kilometres north of the other one. |
Hi P,
The 07:30 from Orvieto gives you an 0:18 hr layover. That's plenty of time. ((I)) |
Thanks so much for all the help...I think we might do the one hour layover. We will have luggage...hopefully not a lot...and one of our travelling companions does have problems with his feet from time to time and can't always move quite as fast as we'd like. I'd rather make it easier for him...10 minutes isn't a lot of time. The 7am train out of Orvieto is a little too early for this group. Again, thanks for all your help.
