fairoaksjim, kybourbon has given you information about convents far above and beyond the call of duty. I think you'll simply have to accept that the more inexpensive convents are *not* going to give you the amenities and comfort of a well-rated three-star hotel. You'll either have to live with that - or pay hotel prices.

As for the B&Bs, most of them have ranges of prices. Late June/July are highest season; you will pay the highest rate listed, which is not much different from that of a comparable hotel. Convents do not generally have seasonal rates.

ky, well, no! I don't want to, so I haven't. (I don't want to give money to a convent either!) I walk in Rome, so maybe that's why I get to bed after 1 am.

I never said that. I appreciate and "accept" all that KYB has said. I love the idea.

I am neither young nor a partyer, but I too like to keep my options open, particularly in the summer with those long, hot days. I wouldn't likely even go to dinner before nine and a Roman meal can last hours. Then walking, perhaps a drink, taking photos when the streets are emptier and sights are lit up, etc. I also have been known to go to events (i.e., see bands) when I visit.

Depends on the individual, of course, but anything before 1am would be too early for me.

Sounds like it might work for fairoaksjim, though, so good luck!
