Chances of exchanging a damaged 50 Euro Note for a New One?

Last summer our son got caught in torrential rains in Barcelona that soaked through to his money belt. When he returned home, I managed to salvage a 50 Euro note but when I peeled it apart, it tore into two pieces and some of the edges were missing. My husband and I are going to France soon and wonder whether we might be able to exchange this note for an undamaged one at a bank. One of the halves has a serial number on it. Does anyone have knowledge as to whether this might be possible?

Thanks for your help.

Go to a Banque de France agency for this.

One of the easiest ones to find is at Place de la Bastille.

Kerouac - Thaks for the information. It would be great not to have to just throw 50 euros away!

You may find getting into a Banque de France office a triffle difficult. I did it recently and had to get through a sealed air glass cabinet with another bloke who also wanted to get in and had a small panic attack. Take all ID.

In any case, if you walk into an ordinary bank, they will tell you that you have to go to the Banque de France if you are not a customer. All of the other banks in France must submit their damaged notes to the Banque de France.

You must never enter the security chamber of any bank with another person. It is always one person at a time.

Ker gives good advice.
However if one serial nr is missing you may be refunded half of it.

The website of the Banque de France has an English version with all the useful information.

I never dreamed that the Banque de France would have such helpful information in English on its website.

It's all those Americans going out in the rain in unsuitable clothing. I usually stay indoors if it is raining.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Chartley and Kerouac - humor taken...but in his defense, he was a college student who was in Spain to improve his Spanish and got caught at a music festival in Barcelona without an umbrella. Personally, I carry an umbrella and a throwaway plastic rain coat if there is any threat of rain. I also keep my money in a little Ziplock bag in my money belt to be prepared for unexpected rain. He didn't inherit my penchant for over-preparedness!

Yep, Banque de France. The one near Le Bon Marché is very easy to access, with friendly and helpful staff (amazingly for France ). And they see all kinds of reasons for it! I was there because right after one of my clients paid me for privately tutoring her child, said child's younger sister promptly (accidentally, I might add) ripped the note in half. The lady in front of me at the Banque de France had had her banknote mauled by her dog.
