Champs E.....no market ‘this year? How will it look?

Other markets in the city?

Another question not related.....We have taken people to Le Train Bleu for the Wow factor at a reasonable price. Can you suggest another restaurant similar? Not the extreme high end or dress up places like Pre Catalan, Tour d’Argent, etc.
Just a restaurant that says Wow! In the surroundings.

I like fir the wow factor the restaurant at the institut du monde arabe. Forgot the name now. In the 5th. Lebanese food. Overlooking Notre Dame.

Google "Paris markets" for pages of links to other street markets.

The Champs Elysées will be illuminated as usual. There will be no useless clutter this year in the lower part, but I wouldn't be surprised if the city decides to use at least part of the space for something or other. I'm sure there is a team brainstorming about it.

Train Blue is one of our regulars. We often dine there when we return home from one of our (usually) 2 annual trips to France, by taking the TGV from Avignon, Lyon, Annecy, etc to the Gare de Lyon for a one-nighter in the area before flying home the next morning.

Two years ago we visited Paris for 2 weeks, and we focused on Historic Brasseries of Paris. Our favorite was Mollard - across the street from the Gare St Lazare.

Why is there no market on the Champs Elysees this Christmas?? We've always enjoyed strolling along the street & "booth shopping". I imagine it is somewhat of a nuisance for the locals - but the tourists love it (I imagine). If it is indeed closed now - that would be another blow for the tourists - along with the AirB&B/vacation apt rental thing, and also closing all the streets in Paris to car, taxi, & bus traffic like they did last year in late Sept when we were there for a one-nighter.

When we lived in the Marais we used to like to take friends to Le Dome Du Marais. Really nice ambience. They talk about it in this article, which also mentions some other interesting places:

Christmas markets are not a French thing except in areas of France where there is a German heritage. These Paris Christmas markets are as authentic as Gondolas would be in Amsterdam's canals and have been set up for tourists.

The Christmas market in Strasbourg goes back to 1579. The Champs market goes back to 2008.

The city cancelled the contract of the private company that does it (this is not a city-run market), some dispute over something of course. Article I read said partly the city thought the guy running it didn't do that good a job, that is was too tacky for the Champs-Elysees. I think the same guy runs the Tuileries ferris wheel thing.

This whole Christmas market thing has gotten out of hand, I think, it was just done to make money and was copied from Germany to begin with. It's not some Parisian historical tradition. There are many others even in Paris area, anyway.

This is a list

I was just coming to recommend Les Ombres. I've taken a couple of people there and it definitely has wow factor. Also, consider L'Oiseau Blanc on top of the Paris Peninsula. Fabulous views and really good food and service. A bit more expensive than Les Ombres.

Supposedly, the chief "forain" guy claims that 15 million tourists attend with bated breath the opening of the Champs-Elysees Marche de Noel.
I think a correction is in order - he's really angry that he won't be able to make big money this year. Sour grapes.

He was so angry that he and his fellow Christmas market people blocked all of the main highways into Paris this morning. The backups went for miles.

That will certainly make the mayor change her mind.

YES— — -I forgot about Les Ombres,
I like it because, like Le Train Bleu, it’s not quite so formal.

We tried to book l'Oiseau Blanc for a Thursday evening early in December for 6 people. The restaurant wanted my credit card #, copy of the card (front and back) and a copy of my passport! That just seemed excessive so I didn't book....will probably regret that decision.

Judy, I'm surprised. They did that to me when I booked for July 14th (the fireworks were amazing from there!) but not for the other dinner and lunch I booked. Probably because it was for six people? It really is a lovely place for dinner.

Belinda, we may still book it. It just annoyed me that a CC# was not enough. They could always put a pending charge on it to see if it's real.

I don't know Judy - you might expect a retinal scan and blood draw (or worse) when you arrive. I am with you the passport number seems a bit much.

Good riddance to the market on Champs-Élysées. What a bunch of tacky junk! Glad the lights will remain.
