Chamonix to Switerland??
 

We will be staying in Chamonix for 5 days in September. We would love to take a day trip to Switerland, but I haven't been able to find much information about Swiss border towns. What would be the best place to visit. Would it be better to drive (we'll have a car) or take the train? All suggestion are appreciated. Thank you.

How about comments on good Swiss web sites? I haven't been able to find much Switerland info on the forum. I know there must be somebody out who has some information. Any help would be appreciated!

When I was 17, I went on a group guided tour of France. We went to Chamonix, I know that we had to pass through Switzerland at some point and stopped in Vevey for a few hours. Although we didn't see much, it was GORGEOUS. So this might be an option. I'm not sure how to get there, though.

We drove from Chamonix to Gruyeres. It's kind of a tourist attraction with cute buildings, and cheese making facilities. Nothing exceptional, but a reasonable day trip from Chamonix.

Amy. <BR> <BR>Another very pleasant option would be to drive your car Evian les Bains, about an hour and a half I think, then park your car, and take a lake steamer trip, which also crosses into Switzerland to maybe Montreaux. To get back to Evian in the evenings there are regular ferry crossings from Lausanne, which you can reach easily on the Swiss side of the lake, either by steamer, bus or train. An early Dinner in Evian, a quick flutter in the Casino, and drive back to Chamonix. The scenery is great from the lake. <BR>If you decide to do this a little planning will be needed to synchronise with the steamer timetables, which you will find on the web, or they will have them in Chamonix at the Tourist Info.Centre.

From Chamonix, Geneva is a good day out - only around an hour's drive, and lots to see and do. <BR> <BR>Also, you can get a train from Chamonix to Martigny, which is a pleasant small town. It has a few Roman ruins, including a small amphitheatre, and a very good art gallery. There's not a huge amount to do there, but enough for a few hours. The train journey is worth the trip in itself, though - fantastic mountain views all the way. <BR> <BR>Anna

Never been to Switzerland,but with research and the fact I love mountains I would suggest you check out Zermatt which is 2:26 hrs.( 151.1km ) away or <BR>possibly Interlaken area which is 2:46 <BR>hrs.(174.4km).Great web site for showing <BR>directions etc. is www.cwlease.com.Going <BR>by train usually takes a lot longer.I <BR>myself will be going to Switzerland Sept.4th for the first time.
