Chamonix

Thanks to all of you who have left wonderful suggestions that I have used to plan my first trip to Switzerland. My adult daughter and I will be spending ten days the end of April, 2009 from Lausanne, to five days in BO and ending with 2 days in Chamonix. Having trouble with the Chamonix accommodations. Thoughts?

The only problem may be finding accommodations that are open in this off-season, between winter skiing and summer hiking

And with your itinerary be sure to buy a Swiss Pass of some type - covers trains even to Chamonix - for your itinerary it is a no-brainer IMO

What is your budget?

I can recommend Hotel Croix-Blanche, 3*. Can't beat its location, right in the centre of the village.

Enjoy!

> Swiss Pass of some type - covers trains even to Chamonix ...

at 50 % discount it seems.

When we were there last year around this time of the year, we stayed in Hotel L'Arve... if I remember it was around euro 80 or so per night and was very good and easily accessible...

You can't get hotel availability? I tried venere.com for 28 - 30 April 2009 and got 7 hotels available between €52 and €140 for a double room.

Yes, thanx, Swiss Pass is on the list! Will work on the hotel. Thanks!

To my knowledge, and having taken it recently with a Swiss Pass it covers the train in full to Chamonix, even the French portion

kappa - where did the 50% come from - things do change and it could be 50% now but where did you see this?

sincerely

I happened to have the Swisspass validity map at work. The French part to Chamonix was indicated in red line that means 50% reduction. That's what I saw.

thank you

PalQ, I take back what I wrote. You are right about Swiss Pass. It covers 100 % till Chamonix. I misread what is said on the following map.

http://www.swisstravelsystem.ch/file...M-08-enLOW.pdf

50% discount is for additional tickets WITH Swiss Flexi Pass.

YUUP! Solid red to Chamonix...8-) Thank you both!!

PalenQ Sep 18th, 2008 10:26 AM

Well Kappa i would not have been surprised if such a change had been made - as part of the line is in France. And there have been small reductions in Swiss Pass discounts recently - like only 25% from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch instead of the previous 25%.

and to me the Martigny-Chamonix railway is one of the more dramatic mountain railways in Switzerland or France - esp it's cliff-hanging ascension from Martigny

GMA68 - try not to think of the accident a few years back when this narrow-gauge train fell off the cliff - i'm not sure anyone got injured but can't remember - sit on the left side of the train if a nervous Nellie

A gauche merci... However, not sure my daughter will go at all. But it's on my list.
