Cesky Krumlov or Krakow
Hi, I will be traveling to Europe in March.
Due to a limited amount of time, I have to chose between Cesky Krumlov or Krakow. I heard Cesky is similar to Rotenberg, Germany which I absolutely loved. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Jill |
Of the two, I have only visited Krakow. I travel to Warsaw frequently on business, and on three of those occasions I have ended my business trip with a few days in Krakow (only three hours by train from Warsaw).
What differentiates Krakow from Cesky Krumlov, I would think, is that while both of them are beautiful, UNESCO heritage cities, within a short distance of Krakow are two other UNESCO sights -- Auschwitz and the Wielicza salt mines. Both are well worth the excursion. Michael |
I'd choose Krakow. How much time are you going to spend in this place? If only one day, then either would do, but I wouldn't want to spend a lot more than that in Cesky Krumlov if Krakow is the alternative. Krakow is one of my favorite cities in Europe. CK is touristy Disneyland cute and has an interesting castle but is quite small. If you had something of particular interest you wanted to see in either, I guess you would have mentioned it.
It's hard to say in a vacuum and what else you are doing or plan to do. I haven't been to Rotenberg so don't know the comparison. |
Jill: Where will you be coming from? How much time will you have? Where are going to.
Cesky Krumlov really isn't similar to Rotenberg (I, too, love Rotenberg). It isn't Disney Land either. If you have a day, CK would be fine. It is beautiful with spectacular views especially from the hill on which the Castle resides and the Castle is more than just interesting. It is a lovely village and can be done in a day. Krakow is much larger, cannot really be covered in a day and is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The architecture is fantastic. And, as noted, there is much to do in the surrounding area as well, e.g., Auschwitz, the Salt Mines, Zakopane, etc. CK and Krakow are 336 miles apart. So, where you are coming from and where you are going to become very relevant. Have a great trip. |
Whoops! That should be Rothenburg.

I think this website of Cesky Krumlov is one of the most interesting and clever websites I've seen promoting a city: http://www.ckrumlov.cz/uk/atlas/i_cmm.htm
See what you think :-D |
Try the search engine here. There have been several threads about Cesky Krumlov.

We visited Krakow in June last year and CK on an earlier trip. Of the two I found Krakow to be the most interesting. Did not visit Auschwitz but certainly the salt mines are most interesting.
The Jewish quarter of Krakow is also interesting. |
I've been to both, and while I loved both if I had to choose one, it would be Krakow.
