Cesky Krumlov in December?

Will be in Prague Dec 19 thru 23. I understand the Castle in C.Krumov is closed. Does it pay to take 5 hr roundtrip tour @ $100 for 2 to do the 10 hour day trip without seeing the castle? We are doing Grand Circle tour down Danube(from Vienna to Budapest) with Prague extension. Anyone do this?

In my opinion -- definitely no (not worth it). The castle is the main point of interest. I might see doing it if it were within an hour or so of Prague.

I disagree that the castle is the main point of interest. For me, the town itself was the main point of interest. It's a beautiful, atmospheric old-world town with lovely architecture. Strolling the streets is a delight - a totally different experience from the larger cities of central Europe. On the other hand, it's an awfully large time investment for so little time - so for that reason I might skip it. But don't skip it JUST because the castle is closed - the town is much more than the castle.

Cesky Krumlov is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever laid eyes on, and I have been to a lot of places. However, I just couldn't imagine missing a tour of the Rosenberg Palace or the Baroque Theatre. I also don't know what the town would look like without all its gorgeous foliage. I would wait and go another time. Just my opinion.
