Central Area To Stay In Amsterdam
 

We are 2 single women in our mid 30's planning a trip to Amsterdam in the spring. We want to stay in an area that is safe, has good night life and that we can walk most everyplace we need to go. Any suggestions and, if so, any hotel recommendations in that area?

I love the Jordaan area. It is quaint and beautiful with many 1-2 * hotels. I have stayed at the Nadia Hotel and the Westerntoren and both were clean and safe.

Amsterdam ROCKS !!!

We really liked the Agora Hotel and the whole area around it. You could walk one way and get to the Rijksmuseum and the other way to get to the Anne Frank house. There is a grocery store on the corner and very easy tram access. There is fabulous shopping all around. The staff at the Agora are friendly and knowledgeable. The hotel isn't fancy but is perfectly adequate. There's even a laundromat where they will do your laundry for you.

Try Priceline.com for hotels for some great rates. Chances are you will get either the Marriott or the Renaissance if you bid for a 4 star hotel. The Marriott is near Vondel park, the museums, concert hall. The Renaissance is closer to Dam Square and Central Station. If you're lucky you might get the Swissotel which is right on Dam Square. While they might not be as charming as other hotels, they are nice and in good, safe locations. Amsterdam is a great city for walking, and the public transportation is great. Have fun and eat a stroopwaffle (sp?) for me.

I enjoyed staying in the Canal House on a visit this summer. The location was quiet but close to the busier areas. There were many nice restaurants nearby and a little further over in the Jordan as well. Dam Square was not my cup of tea! Way too busy but the canal zone was wonderful for wandering or sitting outside at a cafe and watching all the bike riders! Enjoy!

I'd say the Jordaan or even Zuid . . . there's no problems getting around on the trams so just avoid the touristy center.

I agree that the Agora is a great hotel in a great location...
