Cell phones in France

My daughter is off to France for a one year youth exchange. I would like to have some advice for her regarding a cell phone for use during that time. She would want to be able to text back to Canada. Any ideas of the best service provider, brand of phone and what she might expect to pay. I am assuming a pay as you go with a texting application but we are not sure what types of services might be available. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

In the left column of the site below, looks like you might want to check things like "cartes prépayées" and "SMS illimités" among other things...

And of course your daughter knows that if she gets a land line, calls to North America can be a local call? Oh, but that is so much less cool than using a mobile phone, I know.
