julia t-That sounds interesting. I am seeing her today so will let her know. She will definitely be spending time in Internet cafes.

logos-She will probably either buy the SIM card in Dublin or Barcelona. They are flying into Dublin and will be there a couple of days. Then they fly to Barcelona for a few days and from there head off to the rest of the countries via train. Is there an advantage of buying the SIM card in a particular country?

It's easier to buy the SIM in Dublin. You always have an "native" English helpdesk and webpage AND
the "passport" option costs 99ct in Spain and only 79ct in Ireland.
Other than that, you could check, if it's cheaper to reach an Irish mobile phone number or a Spanish one from your location. I bet it's Irish.. :-)

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 11:30 AM

75ct per call would be with a German Vodafone SIM. Obviously the "passport" option has slightly different prices in different European countries.

logos-Thanks again. Seems Ireland will work best. I am not too worried about my cost calling her because I doubt we will speak that much. Email is fine for me. When my older DD was in Europe a few years ago, she was gone for 3 months. We meet up with her in London. I think the only time I spoke to her on the phone was once in the London airport and maybe one other time.

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 11:42 AM

And yes, she has to decide if she prefers a 24ct/min incoming / 49 ct/min outgoing prepaid plan OR the passport option which means 79ct incoming PER CALL. She can't have both.

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 11:44 AM

Well, in that case the Irish SIM card without any further options would be best imho. :-)

paula1470 Jun 9th, 2008 12:19 PM

I looked at the vodaphone Irish website and it looks pretty clear except for one thing. Can she buy just the SIM card from them and put that in her unlocked AT&T phone? That would save her the money of buying a phone there. Or should she just buy a prepaid phone. She will take her old razor phone which is not the one she is currently using. So if it doesn't work, she can just toss it.

Hope I am understanding this all correctly.

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 12:34 PM

No problem, she has to check first, if the phone has at least the 900 Mhz band, the razr V3 should have both, the 900 and 1800 mhz as needed ouside the US. The razr does have a menu, where you can switch between "Europe/Asia" and "Americas". At least mine has :-)

The manual will tell too. If those frequencies aren't available on the phone, she will have to buy a new phone, rather cheap with the card.

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 12:43 PM

In any case this one looks cool. :D

Samsung E250v Prepay FTC (
Price 59 € , €40 FREE Call Credit
camera, bluetooth, mp3, quadband (works in the US) and a RADIO :-)

The 39€ Nokia (40 € free call credit) looks rather basic compared to that and can't be used in the US.

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 12:50 PM

A SIM card with 10€ credit costs 9.99€

logos-You have been amazing. I am heading over to my daughter's now and we will go over the options. Will also check her razor phone but I think it will work.

Robespierre Jun 9th, 2008 01:33 PM

The RAZR will only work in Europe if it uses a SIM chip (only AT&T and T-Mobile use the European technology - called GSM - in the US).

logos999 Jun 9th, 2008 01:35 PM

Hi Robes, read from the beginning :-)
"Our US carrier is AT&T", no CDMA :-)

Robespierre Jun 10th, 2008 02:07 AM

Hi logos

The carrier of the spare RAZR was not specified. Read carefully: She will take her old razor phone which is not the one she is currently using.

If you get your daughter's phone unlocked, you can buy an international sim. My wife uses the Passport service at Ekit,

http://www.ekit.com/ekit/MobilePurchase/Sims

It costs $69 for the sim with $10 calling credit, and the charges are 49 US cents per minute for outgoing calls. I use the United Mobile + sim,

https://www.united-mobile.com/?p=&l=en

The sim costs 30 € with 10€ calling credit, and outgoing calls cost 45 US cents per minute. Incoming calls are free in most European countries, and you have to make a call once every nine months (better check this) to keep both sims alive indefinitely.

As suggested, so that she can keep just one number, have here buy one of the international sims (United Mobile, Yackie, Maxroam, etc.) There are way too many of them to list here. Check here or post the same question there.

telestial.com has an unlocked Europe phone, charger, and SIM with airtime for $39. You may or not be able to beat the cost/convenience of their airtime, 99¢ outgoing for any country in western Europe - but you never have to swap SIMs and juggle phone numbers constantly.
