This might seen an odd question but it's worth try. Does a cell phone from the US work in the UK?

Depends on the carrier - we have AT&T and you have to have a special world phone - our regular phones would not work. Check with your carrier.

You have to have a GSM tri-band phone. That will work, nothing else will.<BR><BR>Doug

We usually rent one from Voicestream and it works fine. People back home then have a number to reach you in Europe before you leave. Your regular phone will not work.

If you have a Verizon Wireless cell phone at home, you can call Verizon and get them to transfer your number to an international phone temporarily, for a fee. They will then mail you the appropriate rental handset to use, before you go.<BR><BR>Otherwise, you can buy or rent a cell phone in Europe, and refresh it with cards you purchase. If you're there for a short visit, this can be cheaper than the Verizon arrangement, although you won't be getting calls on your "home" number this way.

MG..<BR><BR>I have call forwarding attached to my phone in the US. So since I have had an English cell phone for several years, before I leave I put the call forwarding on and all calls to my home phone are routed to my cell phone in the UK.<BR><BR>People calling me pay for the call to my home number and I pay for the call from my home number to my cell phone. Since receiving cell calls in England is free if you have an English cell phone, the cost to me is negligible.<BR><BR>The one draw back and I don't understand the rationale of Verizon, is I have what is called Ultra call forwarding which should allow me to set up and take off call forwarding from the remote location. For some imbecilic reason, Verizon does not allow you to use this service on foreign calls.....so either I have to leave the call forwarding on or if I wish to turn it off, I can't put it back on to outside the US. So if I am visiting more than one country, I am kind of stuck.....

If you are renting a car from AutoEurope, they also may GIVE you a CELL PHONE to use--you just pay for the calls....<BR><BR>OR if not renting a CAR, you CAN rent a CELL PHONE from Auto Europe---<BR><BR>We had one last year in England and used that as our BASE and you got incoming calls ( from England) free and only had to pay for outgoing....99 cent min....then when we flew into Italy, we were able to use the same phone ,but the cost of the calls went up to $1.19 a min....<BR><BR>We did not use the phone for idle conversations or to call home-- only for emergency,or if we needed directions or if we had to let a hotel know we were running late.<BR><BR>Hope this helps....
