I should have added that I requested that my kids call me, rather than the other way round. I believe it's a bit less expensive that way. And we kept the calls short. It was more to touch base, or for emergencies.

Per Orbitz, Hertz, Alamo and National are all offering free mobile phone rental for North American customers who are traveling in Europe. Cellhire USA is providing the cell phones. Rate to the US is $2.40, but I don't plan to call home often but just want it for emergencies and calling within Germany.
I'd appreciate it if some of you more seasoned cell phone users would let me know if you think this looks like a good deal or a bad deal.
