cell phone in Italy
Does anyone know of the best way to have full, worldwide cellular phone service in Italy? Rent vs buy - pre-paid minutes, etc.?

I live in NYC and, as I travel overseas quite frequently, I purchased the Ericsson T28 World Phone. I have VoiceStream international service and can use my cell in 160 countries (including the United States, of course). The phone was very inexpensive and worth every penny, on my opinion.

More suggestions, please.

Please someone...we need more replies here.
I phoned auto europe and roberts. There are exorbitant prices for lost or missing phones here and the shipping costs are quite hefty.
I need suggestions for a rental for 9 days which will work well in Italy.
What about renting a phone in italy?
Thanks for any help you can give

People: I also need help on this one. First trip to Italy and driving alone. I don't usually use a cell phone here (US) but I will want the security of having one there to call for an emergency. What do you advise? Thank you.
Sandy,
There is another post on fodors regarding cell phone rentals for Europe in which I wrote that after investigating many possibilities, I have opted for the AT&T world phone and service. Just call them and they will send you everything. I found the price much more reasonable than the other companies mentioned. The Erickson world phone had some negative comments from consumers on the amazon.com site. Apparently, many people have a problem with it working once they use it in the U.S. (you also have to buy a monthly plan).
Hope any of this helps.
Have a nice trip!

Thanks Pam. Anyone else?
Sandy
