Cell Phone in Europe?? Electronics?

Hey everyone! So I'm leaving in 6 days for Europe and I was wondering what I should do about having a cell phone in Spain. I have an Iphone4 and I don't know if I should use it while I am there or get some kind of GoPhone? Also, should I buy the phone and SIM in the United States? or wait until I land in Madrid?
Also, I've heard that it's not a good idea to take electronics, but I really wanted to take my Digital SLR camera so I could take some awesome photos. Now I'm scared to take it along. Anyone have any comments?

Someone recommended not to bring your camera on vacation? Is that from a source your trust?

Isn't that what cameras are made for? Sounds like a bunch of hogwash to me.

Why is it not a good idea to take electronics? All of Spain has them.

Using the iPhone's calling and data feature over the cellphone network can cost a bundle in roaming fees, but if you turn off data you still have Wifi to use wherever you have a signal, and that means Skype would be available for outgoing phone calls.

If you'll need a phone often, look into the GoPhone type and compare cost/convenience with what your US provider offers in roaming or temporary overseas coverage. (usually the best values will be found in the country where you will use it.)

As for the camera, take it and get great photos, but keep a close watch on it (don't hang it from a chair in a restaurant, for example).

Yeah, don´t bring your digital camera over. We Spaniards still have all those analogic ones and would kill any American tourist owning those nice SLR cameras. Pity we still don´t have computers to see the nice pictures they take...And no electricity either, how could we...

C´mon...

Get your iPhone unlocked before you go. Get a SIM in Spain.
Here's a site with info on where and from whom to get a SIM: http://www.prepaidgsm.net

And watch out for mikelg! He no doubt will be coveting your phone! LOL

If your iPhone plan is from AT&T, search this forum for " iPhone in Paris" to see my explanation of how to use your iPhone in Europe.

As noted, if you unlock the iPhone, you can purchase a sim from any of the major service providers, MoviStar, Vodafone or Orange. You can pick up a "pay as you go" phone once you arrive in Spain, but please, not at the airport.

I carry at least two digital cameras at all times. I can't see what the problems might be. And of course our friend Mikel is being a bit facetious.
