cell phone and other electronics allowed on plane?
OK...my newest question for those of you who have traveled internationally. Can you bring electrontics onto the plane? A friend just told me that NO cell phones, ipods or game boys are allowed. I don't think this is right but thought I'd ask first.
Thanks! |
Your friend will probably send you to Casablanca for the waters.
1. You may carry cell phones, but they must be powered off from cabin door closed to open again (<i>i.e.</i> when the folks in the front office are relying on electronics to keep the shiny side up). 2. You may use PDAs, iPODs, GameBoys, &c. but they must be turned off during takeoff and landing. When to power down and when it's okay to run them is announced by the flight attendants. |
sure you can - you just can't take lots of separate carry-on bags to hold them all.
|
On US soil, your cell phone may be turned on after landing. You don't have to wait on the door to open.

All are OK. The only potential problem is using a DVD player or notebook playing DVD. Alitalia will not allow use, there may be other airlines also. Its OK on Air Canada, BA, BMI.
|
I wonder what the rationale there is...unless AZ charges for inflight movies?
|
Thanks for the quick replies...I didn't think that sounded right!
|
Not sure what the logic is Robespierre - I DID ask WHY, but in usual AZ fashion, they couldn't be bothered explaining. I heard after that it has something to do with instrument interference with the Airbus, but AC use Airbus exclusively and they don't have a problem :)

Well, Marconi <u>was</u> Italian...but I think they're way - way - off base with this one. A computer that's playing a DVD isn't doing anything one that's <i>not</i> playing is. Except perhaps running down the battery at a prodigious rate (optical drives are notorious power hogs).

To the original poster, it might be possible that your friends were referring to a period of time where such items may have been prohibited (last year, terror alert/event in London?)...

Logic of electronics: next time you are at a meeting with a powerful public address system, take your laptop, dvd player, etc and hold it next to a live mike. Operate it. Chances are, you will hear a loud squeal. That is your machine emitting electromagnetic interference. (If you read your manual it will give the exact specifications). This has the potential -- note potential only -- to affect certain navigational equipment, notably, if I understand correctly, altimeters, thus the ban in the first and last 10,000 feet.
Please correct me if I am wrong about the latter. I know from experience about "laptop squeal" over microphones. |
I think it's called, "You fly on MY plane..you fly by MY rules."
