Cathedrals in Mainz, Worms and Speyer

We'll be based in Stuttgart, and we're very interested in church arquitecture. Do the cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Speyer worth a visit? Is it doable to go by car in the three at the same day?

I cannot honestly comment on the three you have named but given your stated interest, have you considered visiting Ulm for the tallest church spire on earth?

Yes, of course we have visited Ulm and Cologne, the "Doms" are wonderful! But, anyway, thank you for your suggestion, Singletail.

If you like cathedrals - especially romanesque cathedrals - then the sites you mentioned are definitely worth a visit and can be done with a day trip from Stuttgart. Speyer is about 90 minutes from Stuttgart. If you take the B35 you can stop off at Maulbronn Abbey for a short visit. Be sure to visit the Royal Vaults. You might also visit the Jewish Baths in Speyer. It is only another 30 minute drive to Worms and another 45 minutes to Mainz. In Mainz you might also visit St. Stephen's Church - gothic for a change of pace and with beautiful windows designed by Marc Chagall. The Guttenberg Museum is also worth a visit. Expect a 2 hr. drive back to Stuttgart. A full day, but definitely worth while!

Worms and Speyer Doms are considered among the finest Romanesque examples. Mainz's Dom is quite large and has a terrific feel to it as well. There are ofte impressive concerts held there. The area around the Mainzer Dom is a very nice spot to hang out, shop, and enjoy an outdoor cafe.
