Catching a train from cinque terre to dordogne.
 

Hi, can anyone help with advice about the best way to travel by train from Cinque Terre to the Dordogne?

No responses, now I'm worried that I didn't put the question properly! Do I have to backtrack to Milan to make this happen? Or should I break it down into smaller trips?

Hi Cathie - From the Cinque Terre your route would be via Genoa/Ventimiglia, I think.

I can't imagine your having to go back to Milan. Can't you train from Genoa?

We drove to the Dordogne, so I'm not familiar with the train situtation. Over time, though, I've gotten the impression that the train is not available for west-bound out of Provence. Maybe there's bus service out of Marseilles or Avignon?

The Dordogne is a big place, with no obvious central station.

Perigueux or Brive are about as central as you can get, but you're presumably going to have to have a car to drive round, and both these stations are way off the main railway lines. It's likely therefore that you'll do better getting a train to Bordeaux or Toulouse - in your case Toulouse - then hire a car and drive into the Dordogne proper.

YOu shouldn't need to go to Milan. But you'll probably have to change trains at Genoa somewhere like Nice.

Thanks everyone! It was late at night when I was trying to think this through and I did mean Genoa, not Milan!! I think that we will catch trains into France, possibly Toulouse and then hire a car. I'm so grateful for the help, this is so much better than just random google searches for info that is needed.I spent hours over my Christmas break trawling through different forums while planning for our trip and loved the suggestions that are made.

Brive is actually a stop on the Corail train going between Toulouse and Paris. It is closer than Toulouse to the Dordogne.

I just checked CT to Genoa to Nice to Toulouse, and there are several schedules that work with only 2-3 train changes - but it's gonna take all day.

That's a difficult route. I would look into flying from Genoa to Bergerac or Toulouse or Bordeaux or Perigueux...check out www.whichbudget.com and try various combinations. Maybe there are small airports closer to the Cinque Terre than Genoa, too.

Perhaps Pisa?
