Catch plane in Rome from Sorrento
I am scheduled to fly from Rome to the USA at 1:00 pm on March 23. Can I stay overnight in Sorrento and take an early Circumvesuviana train from there to Naples and then a Eurostar from there to Rome in time to make the plane on the morning of the 23rd, or should I get to Rome the night before and stay there to be sure to be on time for my flight? Some say a sudden train strike could make it impossible to get to Rome on time in the morning.

It's possible but it might depend on the day of the week and whether it was a holiday weekend or during commuter rush hour.

Hi jrpfeiffer, everyone has a different mode of travelling. Personally I would get to Rome the day before. I would not want to depend on getting from Sorrento to the airport in Rome on the day that I am flying home.
I am sure that you will need to be at the airport at least by 11:00am (two hours before your flight). For me that would be cutting it to close. And yes, trains could be on strike (probably not) or running late (probably). Persosonaly I just would not chance it. |
Oh my, forgive my spelling, I should have clicked on the Edit button.
Anyway, I hope that you understood my message to you. |
Jrp - I've done it - but you'd need to leave Sorrento by 06.00 or soon after to make Fiumicino by 11.00.
Your choice :) Steve |
Hi jr,
What will you do if the trains between Sorrento and Rome are running late? |
I wouldn't chance it. We once had our Eurostar from Venice to Milan cancelled with no explanation. A rare case, I'm sure, but you'd be better off in Rome overnight.

Thank you very much for all your replies. The consensus seems pretty clear. As much as I'd like to spend one last night in Sorrento and take the early morning trains to Rome, I guess I won't chance missing my plane.
