Catalonia-favorite small village to stay

HI,

We have 4 days that we are still not sure where to stay. We start in Girona (in a hotel) then hike for 4 days. Come back to Gerona to pick a car up. Want to head up towards Olot for 4 days and set this as our base. Then drive down to Barcelona for the remaining 2 days.

Would like a small apartment Maybe will consider a Parador. I see there is one near Vic. But would like to have a place with a small kitchen.

Suggestions on where people have stayed and who they booked from would help.
Thanks
6ABC

Last year we spent 2 nights in Girona, then we spent a day driving through Catalonia & part of the Pyrenees. We really liked the towns of Besalu, Ripoll & Rupit. We didn't stay overnight but I think they would be nice towns to spend a couple of nights. We also drove through Olot & thought it looked very nice, too, but we didn't have time to stay there.
If you are interested in the Costa Brava, we stayed in CAdaques one night at the Playa Sol, which we loved. Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding Kwoo. We just found a wonderful little apartment in the small town of Sant Climent Sescebes. It is only about 10 miles from Figueres. It is a great spot for us to base ourselves after our 5 day hike along the coast. Not too far from Olot and other points we wanted to take in. We are spending our first 2 night in Gerona and hike to Cadaques on one of our hiking days. It should be interesting. Also planning on driving to Ripoll and Besalu.

Thanks again looks like we are on the right track.

The whole region is awesome. We stayed in a farmhouse near Banyoles, then in Cadaques (also at the Playa Sol, which we loved.) Then rented a villa in Aguillana near the French border, which was tiny and super charming. Also loved Besalu, which we visited various times. We used http://www.villasbarcelona.com/ to book the farmhouse and villa - they have some wonderful-looking apartments as well. And if you want a city, I agree that Girona would be an excellent base. Olot was a great day trip, but I'm not sure I would want to stay there.

Clarification: the town of Aguillana was tiny, not the villa or the French border.

6abc,
Will you write a trip report when you return? I would love to read it for more (hopefully) future trips to Spain. How long is your trip for?

Kwoo, I will do a report. Our trip is 15 days but that is counting travel days.

We are doing a self-guided hiking trip for the first 5 (the company takes your main luggage from hotel to hotel or B&B for you) we just carry our day packs. Each day looks like an average of about 8 miles on Moderate terrain. It is such a great way to immerse yourself into the land and the culture by walking from town to town. We have done it before in Italy (Tuscany) and England (the Cotswolds). It is also great cuz you can eat whatever you want and you walk it off....

I will post to let you know if I survive. It gets harder each year as I get older. But I wii keep kicking till there is no kick left. I am not that old but the body doesn't know that. It is aging faster than me.

I too want to find the perfect cute village to stay in or near in Catalonia (though we need a villa for 8). I eagerly await your trip report!
